Square Meal Review of Lutyens ?

The City loves Lutyens – owned by supremo Sir Terence Conran – and we can see why. The former Reuters building makes a ravishing home for this high-ceilinged, art-deco-inspired foodie complex – and an imposing, ‘high-class’ backdrop for gatherings of all sorts. The bar and bistro work just fine for breakfast and low-key meetings, but when you mean business, you’ll need the sheer class and ‘faultless’ service of the restaurant. You should opt for oysters from the raw bar or an umami attack of asparagus, slow-poached egg, mousseron mushrooms and pork scratchings, before tackling a Dover sole or veal rib with new season’s garlic and Reform sauce– ‘no smears, no foams, no affectations’, just good food from a clever kitchen. The wine list is original, with the odd ‘trophy Latour’ alongside bottles from Croatia, Greece and even Luxembourg. In short, ‘a solid performer’.

From Croatian Malvazijas to Godello, and Mondeuse to Aglianico, there’s barely a boring wine on the 40-bin list, 90% of which are available by the glass – and the pricing is hearteningly fair. Great beer selection, too.

    Lutyens resides in the former Reuters building on Fleet Street and is named after the architect and designer of the building Sir Edwin Lutyens.

    It’s a Terence Conran restaurant and the dining room is a rather simple yet elegantly designed space – everything’s white and very neutral and there’s a glass fronted kitchen so you can see all the action...
