Square Meal Review of Koffmann's at The Berkeley ?

Pierre Koffmann has warmed up considerably since the haughty, glamorous days of La Tante Claire, and his approach to things is now more phlegmatic, affectionate and affable – like ‘the father showing the sons how it’s done’, observes one reader. Customers who know their food and wine feel right at home in this cheerful, split-level dining room with its masses of flowers and friendly, thoughtful staff –you’ll find toffs and teenagers, captains of industry, family parties, and Diet Coke next to dry martinis. It’s low-key, classy and under-stated (‘more Mercedes than Ferrari’), with ‘incredibly tasty’ big-hearted food evoking the spirit of Koffmann’s beloved Gascony. Highlights are many and varied – from squid bolognese and thick slabs of roast monkfish wrapped in bacon to herb-crusted lamb and the legendary glazed pig’s trotter stuffed with sweetbreads and morels. In short, ‘serious munching’ for today’s grown-up Francophiles.

    Nordic Nibbler :: Koffmann

    It's not often you get the chance to eat at the restaurant of a genuine culinary legend, but chef Pierre Koffmann is just that. His first restaurant, La Tante Claire, opened in Chelsea in 1977 and went on to gain three Michelin stars, which it held for 15 years until it moved location to the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge. There the restaurant continued until 2003 when Koffmann retired from cooking (or so he thought). The chefs that have trained under Koffmann read like a who's who of Britain's Michelin hall of fame: Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Wareing, Eric Chavot, and Tom Kitchin.
