A blend of Japanese blond wood & lattice screens with big windows & a utilitarian seating plan, Kiku’s two-tier dining room puts on two very different faces. By day, business lunchers pile
in for well-regarded set lunches that require as little as £10 & half an hour of your time. The Kiku ‘special’ is a top shout, offering mixed tempura, miso soup, sushi & teriyaki-braised
chicken, but you can also dip into abundant raw fish, donburi rice bowls or noodle soups. By night, a more moneyed crowd arrives to indulge in subtle cuts of premium tuna on glistening sashimi
platters, exquisite nigiri or bubbling shabu-shabu hotpots. Alternatively, a £70 Edo dinner dips into the menu’s premium plates. Prices are navigable with careful shopping, & a seat at the
sushi bar adds extra value.
It was time once again to meet up with the cousin and head for Japanese food. Itâs a nice idea to make our way around recommended Japanese establishments and attempt their food. It was on this occasion to Kiku in Mayfair we headed for sushi. It being Mayfair, the prices matched the name. We were seated at the counter to watch the chefs at their work. As I looked around the restaurant there were many Japanese customers which I took to be a good thing. I didnât really know what to order so we just got a selection of sushi. It was by far and away the best sushi Iâve eaten in London and indeed the best sushi Iâve had anywhere in my relatively limited experience of Japanese food. The fish was incredibly fresh and just personified excellent quality. I'll let the pictures do the talking. It made me want to jump on a plane and head to Tokyo where I assume such quality is par for the course.
