Rich colours, elaborate fretwork & plump cushions create an air of oriental luxury at Kazan City’s vividly decorated mezze bar. Beyond it, the mood turns to grandiose formality in the plush
dining room, which is crowned by a majestic central chandelier. The food, like the setting, takes much of its inspiration from the gilded Ottoman tradition: giant fire-roasted king prawns marinated
in chilli & lime or pomegranate-glazed quail to start, followed by one of the ‘fire grills’ (lamb fillet rubbed with rosemary) or perhaps a raki-infused sea bass fillet baked in parchment. To
finish, there are luscious-sounding desserts including a lavish combo of Cointreau & orange blossom syllabub with raspberries marinated in cherry brandy. The short, eclectic wine list includes
a few Turkish bottles; Champagne cocktails continue the indulgent theme & there’s Cristal to please latter-day potentates. The attentive service is in tune with the restaurant’s aspirations.
