Originally a coach house, Kay’s was a wine and spirit merchant for more than 150 years before becoming a pub in the 1970s. Inside, the decor is predominantly deep red, with whisky barrels around
the walls, and much of its pre-pub identity has been retained. Be aware that it’s really small – just one modest room housing the bar, plus a smaller snug through the back. The general effect is of
age and distinction, which fits very well with its New Town surroundings – the chat is more likely to be about Scottish rugby than The X Factor. On tap, you will find seven real ales from breweries
ranging from Theakston’s to Orkney, Kelburn, Stewart’s or Tempest; there are also 50 single malts to sample. A basic bar menu is available at lunchtimes (think Scotch pies, mince and tatties,
chicken curry etc).
