SquareMeal Review of Isola del Sole

What this diminutive restaurant lacks in size, it makes up for in character. The welcome from the owner always seems genuine & the kitchen on the ball. The Isola in the name refers to Sardinia, & there are plenty of culinary treats from the island: local pastas, gorgeous ripe tomatoes, great olive oil & excellent cheeses. Start with a lovely, lightly spiced mussel & clam stew in tomato broth, or a well-presented selection of interesting charcuterie with fig jam. Follow with the likes of roast sea bass with tomatoes, or pork ballotine with beetroot: all cooked to order & with pride. Drink Sardinian wine. The dining room may be a romantic space, but tables are rather too close together; this isn’t the venue to discuss intimate or private business.

Great local
Haven't been here for a while and after last night's crab pasta following the Getty film this is a mistake. Great local, serving quality, simple dishes. Just a bit annoying the wine list jumps to over £30 rather quickly. Still worth a visit even if you had all the money on the world!

This is my favourite local for an unplanned, unpretentious meal out with my husband or a nice, quiet evening out with a friend that I haven't met for a while to have a good catch-up. I love the pasta dishes, all freshly home made and always different types (linguine, fettuccine, ravioli and some tiny sardinian pasta shapes I've forgotten the name of) with delicious sauces (lobster, crab, prawns, veal/rabbit/venison/quail ragu, truffles, courgettes…). The portions are VERY large so go easy on the starters! We tend to just share a platter of antipasto or even just get some of the sardinian flat crisp bread and olives to be able to manage the main course. The menu tends to change quite often which gives a nice variety, but most dishes are so nice you don't want them to ever come off the menu – and they do seem to come back with some regularity. The wine list is short and uncomplicated, most or all wines also served by the glass. Perfect for when you want a nice and tasty meal out with no hassle, no difficult decisions and no massive bill in the end. Prices have gone up since the place was refurbushed a while ago, but still very good value for money.
