The Aqua Group’s second sky-high restaurant in the Shard takes inspiration from the company’s Michelin-starred Hutong in Hong Kong. Northern China is the gastronomic compass point, though anyone
looking for regional oddities may be disappointed – instead, the kitchen deals in unchallenging dishes for special occasions, at unrepentant special-occasion prices: weighing in at £58, the
‘glorious’ Peking duck (carved tableside and served in two stages) is a guaranteed conversation stopper. Luxe dim sum grab the limelight at lunchtime (think baked pork puffs in chinkiang vinegar
sauce), while the carte promises the likes of ‘red lantern’ (soft-shell crab with Szechuan dried chilli), crispy deboned lamb ribs and, less impressively, an overly astringent assembly of chilled
sliced scallops with pomelo segments. Hutong also wows the crowds with its spectacular views, superb bar, dark latticework interiors and ‘sultry Sex and The City vibe’.
The Shard... people love it, or hate it. Personally, I love it as I can see it from my beloved Abbeville Road sticking out amongst London rooftops. A pinnacle, reminding me just how fast London is moving. Not only have we now won the top spot for Europe's highest building, it's one of my favourite spots to view our beautiful city whilst sipping on rather fabulous cocktails and nattering until the sun sets...

After a couple of failed attempts, we finally managed to get a lunch reservation on the Bank Holiday Monday.We arrived about five minutes just before our reservation at 12noon, and were told to wait outside of the building until it was exactly 12 o'clock... I mean, if they take reservations from 12noon onwards, surely they should at least let us enter and take the elevator up instead of leaving us standing outside in the cold...Anyway, ranting aside, up we went and we were seated in a cosy little corner. Probably not the best weather to take a nice photo. Cloudy skies and rain splattered glass - just another day of temperamental English weather. We ordered some cocktails to start with - Comfortably Numb and Chinese Lantern. We were served three appetizer dishes. I really liked the scallops and razor clams which were very fresh, but wasn't quite a fan of the spring rolls. Nice, crispy skin, but I prefer my spring rolls to be fatter and juicier.| Chilled spiced razor clams || Chilled sliced scallops served with pomelo segments || Vegetarian spring rolls | Two seafood dishes, which I enjoyed. Delicious soft shell crab, but such a shame for so much chilli to go to waste...The Dover sole was one of my favourite dishes, although not quite the prettiest looking dish. Loved the sauce, and I wished that there was more to go with our fried rice.| Crispy soft shell crab with Sichuan dried chilli || Boneless Dover sole braised in coriander-vinegar sauce || Sichuan style stir-fried lady's fingers with minced pork, dried shrimp and chilli |I don't often eat fried lady's fingers, as I usually have them steamed or in some sort of curry. I did still enjoy it, really fragrant. | Egg yolk fried rice with diced chicken and shrimp, spring onion and tossed with golden garlic | | Crispy de-boned lamb ribs | | Dessert |- Golden sesame dumplings filled with apple paste and cinnamon -- Red bean glutinous rice dumplings in sweetened ginger soup -- Mango pancake roll - Not the most creative selection of desserts - nice, but probably something you could easily get in Chinatown that would taste just as good, at much more economical prices... Overall, food wasn't too bad, although rather expensive for typical Chinese food...Then again, dining at sky-high places such as The Shard always comes with premium prices. It is after all, mostly about 'the experience'. Another negative is that they have a 1.5 hour seating policy - it's not followed too strictly, but the fact that they reiterate it to you when you are first seated at the table kind of makes you feel a bit conscious about the time. Mum came to soak up her first grandchild (read: completely spoil) which handily coincided with her birthday. We headed to Hutong to celebrate with views over London.When we were growing up, peking duck was my brother's favourite, and I was always a little bit envious of the excess portions he would always be offered first when we were lucky enough to have any. Hutong's offering is some of the best I've had, with a particularly good hoisin sauce, and the second course they serve the remainder of the duck up as is a delicious version of sang choy bow...

Having been to their sister restaurant in Hong Kong I have been really keen to eat here. They both share spectacular views and the signature dishes as you would expect are similar. We arrived early (6.15pm) to a near empty bar and took a window seat to see the view over the river; it was slightly unnerving seeing the trains leaving London bridge, but definitely worthwhile. If you get there later you will struggle to see much at all as the bar was packed on leaving. I opted for champagne which was reasonably priced and my husband went for a cocktail known for its digestive aiding qualities...

Hutong is a Northern Chinese inspired restaurant in the Shard building in London Bridge. I’d already visited their sister restaurant Aqua Shard which I loved and also Oblix (a Reiner-Becker restaurant on the 32nd floor) which I didn’t quite love so much, so was excited to complete the set.The restaurant itself was a rather beautiful one; in the dining room there was a tree at one end and a small glass kitchen at the other with Peking ducks hanging for all to see. There was also a bar and four private dining rooms – it’s an impressively large space...

The recently launched dim sum menu at Hutong proves an ideal opportunity for Sunday brunching. I very much enjoyed a chance to sample this upscale restaurant’s dim sum lunch menu a few weekend’s ago.Situated at the 33rd storey of The Shard, the restaurant’s panoramic perch over London wows without fail. Designed to have the look and feel of an actual traditional street level hutong (‘traditional Chinese urban residential courtyard most typically seen in Beijing’ might be the best way to describe one), the interior presents a delightfully incongruous setting that is worthy of admiration in its own right...

It had been a weekend of sheer piggery in Paris, where, on the Friday night, we unexpectedly ended up at Guy Savoy. We thought we’d cancelled the reservation – they thought otherwise. So to avoid any argument and in that very British way, we forced ourselves. Hard on the heels of that, Le Cinq, again entirely uneccessary and grotesquely over the top. The sort of dining room that makes me want to misbehave, because everyone is being ever-so-polite and speaking in hushed tones. The sort of place where they give you a stool, just for your handbag...

Hutong specializes in Chinese dishes, while Aqua & Oblix focus on modern upscale British cuisine. The London Bridge area has become a primary destination for foodies in recent years, predominantly due to the slate of excellent restaurants in and around Bermondsey street and Maltby Street Market. However, in our opinion the London Bridge area could still do with some good Asian restaurants and so we welcomed the news of Hutong opening in the Shard this month...

Entering the Shard brought us right back to our sky-high dining and drinking ventures in Hong Kong. The tall steel structure, zooming lifts (not to mention popping ears) and sleek glossy interiors. Then there’s the staff who look like they’ve just jumped out of a Vogue magazine shoot. At Hutong, they were clad in charcoal and ebony. The plentiful greeters played tag team with a kind gentleman in a rather smart suit, who walked us up to the restaurant and then handed us over to the manager. This seamless procession of ‘hello’s', ‘welcome’, and even ‘how was your day?’ seemed a little insincere at first but actually became quite endearing by the time we reached our table. And what a table it was...

The name Hutong may be familiar to some of you. It’s the name of the Michelin Starred restaurant in Hong Kong, a much followed and well renowned staple of how times have changed and modern Chinese cooking has really become its own. With so many accolades and awards it's no surprise they have decided to open here in the UK, in Europe’s tallest building - The Shard. Situated on level 33 this really is a fantastic view, especially during the early evening, just as the sun is setting.We arrived a little early to take in the view and sip on some of the cocktails at the bar. If you ever find you’re not hungry and simply want just drinks, I highly recommend it – they really are some of the finest cocktails I've had in London...

The tallest building in London has just seen the line-up of restaurants on the middle floors (31-33) completed, with the opening of Hutong and Aqua Shard to the public. Both are owned by City lawyer-turned-restaurateur David Yeo as part of his 20 strong Aqua global restaurant brand, but offer very contrasting menus and ambience.
