About

This is an elegant and informal setting for lunch and dinner – where guests can meet, celebrate or spend a leisurely afternoon or evening.

A love for food and great ingredients is what drives the Winchester original of this group, inspired by French home-style cooking with robust earthy dishes, and slow-cooked foods, paired with beautiful, delicate presentation.

"We want our dishes to be the best and that means the finest produce in the hands of our talented Chefs. It's about enjoying moderately priced à la carte dining in a down-to-earth, warm and relaxing setting. Choose from simple classic starters, to a wide selection of mains including a wide selection of seasonal salads, Roast Rump of Lamb or 28 day dry-aged Steak Frites to delicious seasonal desserts that make the mouth water."

The attentive waiting staff are knowledgeable and happy to explain the dishes, the ingredients, and how the talented Chefs put them together. The sommelier is also ready to advise, guide, match or recommend the perfect wine.

Surrounded by natural daylight, reclaimed dark-stained floorboards, restored fireplaces, framed pictures and paintings, soft lighting and comfortable chairs.

Second time here and definitely the last

I was here for a business lunch here on Tuesday, as I have dined here before. It was embarrassingly dreadful. The waiter appeared to be somewhat inexperienced and out of his depth ( I got the feeling that they were understaffed). The pigeon was extremely chewy as it had been overcooked, the salmon was overcooked (the skin should be crispy, not the flesh!), the pork was fatty and the crackling not crispy in the slightest, being inedible. The waiter didn't even comment about me not eating most of my main course. I have been a chef and can tell you that the pigeon and pork where not cooked freshly! What is probably more concerning is that I contacted the hotel and they didn't even reply. If you understand and enjoy your food certinly avoid eating here at lunch time at the moment as they are clearly experiencing issues they are not redressing. The Hotel du Vin group subsequently contacted me asking for details about their Winchester bistro, but still no contact from Winchester. How bad is that?.....They clearly don't care.

Winchester is the flagship and although I haven’t visited, I have walked to HdV in Henley on Thames countless times where we have had the good fortune to benefit from the best chefs in the group on rare occasions. Staff get shunted around the branches as needed resulting in peaks and troughs. We have been pleased to bring friends sometimes and at other times e.g. one New Year’s Day evening we were somewhat embarrassed. For all the right reasons, I can recall a starter of sea trout and smoked salmon raviolo which was knockout. The fish encased in the most perfectly cooked wafer thin pasta was presented elegantly in a delicate butter sauce with a scattering of concasse tomatoes. The first time I ordered this dish it was of a standard to challenge any Michelin starred chef, but alas it wasn’t to be repeated. Menus on the whole sound good, and they have some decent ingredients to work with, but I would suggest ordering carefully by selecting the less ambitious sounding dishes (perhaps from the simpler classic choices) which tend to be more dependable. Wines can suit most wallets, and will often impress from a bank embracing worldwide options but predictably major on French. Food on the other hand is not as good value for the quality.

I love this place. Excellent atmosphere, super service and good food. I wonder at times if the portions aren't getting a little small though? I am sure they used to be bigger or am I just greedy for the great food ? The wine list is pretty good, if a little on the pricey side for some of them, but there is something there for everyones taste. You cant beat a balmy afternoon in the walled garden with a bottle of champagne…
