Taking over a previously deserted site on the western edge of Soho, Ham Yard Hotel is the latest addition to the Firmdale Hotels chain. The new venture has a distinct ‘urban village’ feel, with a
tree-filled garden providing the focal point – complete with a specially commissioned bronze sculpture by Tony Cragg. Dine alfresco on the terrace/courtyard or eat indoors from a seasonal menu that
spans pastas, steaks, crispy duck and dishes ranging from seared scallops with tempura courgette flower to ham hock with dandelion and parsley salad or sea trout with samphire and mussels. The
all-day restaurant also dispenses breakfast martinis to go with savoury plates of chilli beans on toast or Hepburn’s black pudding with bubble ‘n’ squeak and eggs ‘sunny side up'.

We'd had our first lunch date over several glasses of champers so a glass of Veuve Cliquot was the perfect way to begin this happy reunion...
