‘A hypnotic experience’ from start to finish, Hakkasan Mayfair is essentially a devil-may-care, home-from-home for high-rollers, oligarchs and ‘overly perfumed non-Londoners’ who come here to
splash their cash in a sleek, moody-blue basement throbbing with cacophony. Not surprisingly, it’s sometimes accused of ‘overpriced snobbery’, but most people reckon this Michelin-starred Chinese
is a ‘compelling treat’. The wondrous culinary approach refines familiar Chinese themes with dazzling flashes of originality: chicken is smoked with jasmine tea, crispy duck appears in a salad with
pomelo, pine nuts and shallots, and there’s Duke of Berkshire pork in the old sweet and sour, with a dash of pomegranate, too. Elsewhere, dim sum is in a class of its own, the ‘indulgent’ silver
cod with Chinese honey and Champagne sauce is a gentle nod to Japanese star Nobu, and ‘addictive’ desserts such as chocolate marquise with kumquats always raise a smile. Despite protests about
‘dull-witted staff’ and extortionate bills, Hakkasan still ‘matches the top giants of Hong Kong’ – high praise indeed!

Hakkasan Group’s wine lists share the same innovative overall structure, with wines separated by quirky categories, like ‘new classics: genius without a château’, or ‘blends: the art of the winemaker’. All have a superlative range of wines, with a heartening willingness to go off the beaten track, as well as reassure diners with a strong selection of Burgundy. An object lesson in professionalism and imagination.
A favourite restaurant is like a good friend. Sometimes you don't see each other that often but when you do you know it'll be lovely, exciting and just as familiar as ever.Hakkasan has long been one of my favourite restaurants in London and when my foodie friend Theresa came to town I was keen for her to try it out. I don't get to see Theresa often as she lives in Bristol, but when I do its like we've never been apart. Lots of old familiar jokes, good times and plenty of wine!...
