Following its £40m refurb, the newly upmarket Great Northern Hotel now contains two smart drinking haunts. As well as enjoying a cocktail lounge appended to the Plum + Spilt Milk brasserie,
imbibers can now park up at the well-appointed art-deco GNH Bar with its chunky zinc counter and glass chandeliers reflected in mirrored ceilings. Cheerful waitresses in clingy black, 90s-style
Helmut Lang mini-dresses serve sliders, charcuterie and light mains, while upbeat barmen enthusiastically promoteclassics and signature drinks. Try an 1854 (Woodford Reserve bourbon, cardamom and
smoked pineapple fix), which references the original hotel’s launch date. Be warned that traffic from smokers heading for the pavement often causes an icy blast through the bar’s door.
