‘Wow… what a view!’ exclaimed one reader as he admired Big Ben and the city lights from this slick eatery in the London Marriott County Hall. Named after the famed 18th-century political
caricaturist, Gillray’s is Bulldog British to the core, witness the chesterfields, Waterford chandeliers and original cartoons in the sophisticated dining room, and the 11 cuts of 35-day aged
Aberdeen Angus beef on the menu –from T-bones and fillets to the show-stopping bull’s head (a gargantuan double-rib steak), all partnered by sides of black pudding, baked bone marrow and duck eggs.
There are ham fritters and crab cakes to start, plus Dorset batter pudding and meringue pie to finish. The English spirit continues in the bar, with gins aplenty, craft beers and cocktails inspired
by Gillray’s sketches – not forgetting regular live jazz. Service delivers, too.
The Southbank’s Marriott County Hall is home to Gillray’s – a rather swish steakhouse with some of the most impressive views you’re likely to find in London Town. The prices are eye-watering to say the least, but they offer a set menu which gives you three courses for £29 and a gin cocktail from their adjacent bar – where you’ll find an incredible variety of gins and some totally delicious cocktails. These are also eye-wateringly expensive, though, so please dear god do NOT get drunk here (unless you’re loaded, then you can do as you please)...

Got gin?Gillray’s does. In fact the bar here boasts almost 70 different types of gin. It’s not just about the gin though. There’s a particularly fine selection of rum and most other spirits. Of course, just as important as what’s behind the bar is what’s going on back there. Head barman Jaume Beato knows his stuff as I observed while he mixed me The Last Instinct (Ron Zacapa 23, Pimento Dram, honey, orange and freshly squeezed lime juice with a Angostura bitters, served flaming, £12.50). Epic. Starting out with a cocktail (or two … or was it three?) before proceeding to dinner was a great way to kick off my night and catch up with an old friend who was joining me for dinner...
