Warm terracotta colours and an air of ‘low-key formality’ set the tone in Giuseppe Turi’s long-serving Putney enoteca. The food isn’t showy or fashionable, but it’s a proper reflection of what
Italy has to offer – ingredient-led, seasonal cooking, ranging from deep-fried courgette flower with datterini tomatoes and punchy basil salsa or home-cured bresaola with Sicilian anchovy and a
soft egg yolk to roast turbot wrapped in potato with warm samphire salad, or slow-braised organic beef stuffed with Parma ham alongside some bitter endive leaves. However, Turi’s real passion is
Italian wine, and his ‘show-stopping’ 350-bin compendium is a treasure trove for all budgets; he is often on hand to give guidance, although the list and menu are cross-referenced for easy access.
Really helpful, enthusiastic staff ‘make it all work’.
With more than 500 wines, nearly all of them Italian, and most accompanied by lengthy tasting notes, this is a list that’s not short on information or affection. There are obvious opportunities to charge big money for big names, but there’s also evidence of thought at the entry level, too. And the selection of older wines is appealing.
