Square Meal Review of Ember Yard ?

The fourth opening from the guys behind Salt Yard (and its spin-offs Dehesa and the Opera Tavern), finds them in deepest Soho with an appropriately named new venue inspired by the rather ‘primal’, fiery possibilities of cooking over charcoal. Ember Yard’s interior is dominated by a centrepiece charcoal grill that comes into its own for a range of Iberian-inspired specialities, and the owners do plenty of on-site smoking over different types of wood (including sherry barrels). Typical offerings range from smoked bream carpaccio with blood orange and bottarga (cured mullet roe) to hot-smoked Old Spot pork belly with a Basque cider glaze, while desserts include hot chocolate ganacha with salted caramel ice cream. Ember Yard also houses a basement bar for cocktails inspired by the kitchen’s smoking and grilling theme.

    SamTheFoodFan :: #STFFBitesize - Ember Yard

    Ember Yard is part of the Salt Yard Group (Salt Yard, Dehesa and Opera Tavern) and their USP is cooking Spanish inspired dishes on their custom-built charcoal grill. I've wanted to try it for a while and when I saw on Twitter that they were offering 50% off the total food bill over the Easter weekend, I couldn't let such a great deal pass me by. Here are the best bites...

  1. We were looking forward to visiting Ember Yard, really looking forward to visiting. Marina had given it a gushing review in her Guardian column, and a respected friend in the hospitality industry said it was his best meal of the year. Plus the Opera Tavern (also part of the Salt Yard group) is still one of our favourite restaurants.

    Situated at the Oxford Street end of Berwick Street, it’s just about far away enough from the madness and tourists. Back in the mists of time when I used to work in Soho Square, Berwick Street was only really known for the tatty stalls and fruit and veg market. A lot has changed since then, the market now sells everything from Arabic to Vietnamese street food and don’t forget this is where Pizza Pilgrims first pulled up in their little van. The street is now so vibrant and diverse with vinyl shops (for our younger readers – the things music came on before CDs and downloads), traditional London pubs, bespoke tailors, vintage fashion and some exciting new restaurants including Florence Knight’s recently relaunched Polpetto...

  1. Ember Yard is the fourth restaurant under the Salt Yard Group's umbrella of Spanish-Italian tapas joints. We used to frequent Salt Yard back in the day when our office was just a stone's throw away from Noho (and Soho), and now Opera Tavern since moving to Covent Garden. I've yet to visit Dehesa, though.

    My friend G has a thing about most things Spanish (particularly Rafa Nadal), so I wasn't surprised she picked Ember Yard for her birthday dinner. I've known G since we were in fourth grade, which means our Gossip Girl-esque friendship has been "maturing" for about 20 years now (wow, WTF)...

    The Funky Truth :: “Not the same as in Spain”

    Enter, if you will, Ember Yard, on Berwick Street in Soho. It’s practically on Oxford Street but don’t let that fool you.

    Coming from someone who preaches ‘Authenticity’ for a living, I like my tapas restaurants to be proper divey – maybe because subconsciously it’s in keeping with Spain’s robust economy – but if you’re after chipped walls, Estrella everywhere and bright yellow and red washed walls, then you better keep on walking. Ember Yard, with tables and tapas bars spread over the basement and ground floors, is muted, classy and a far cry from customary chaos and wonderful disorder. You’re through the door and thrown into a den of deep woods, dark lighting, classy paintings, lanky wine glasses (I’m a massive glass whore now) and perfect service. I say that because tapas servers tend to be as crazy and colourful as the restaurant and just as open to interpretation; you’ll love their bounciness and rapid fire table touches or hate the inevitable frequency of smashes and the accompanying cheers as plates and glasses go flying. At Ember Yard, it’s like the waitresses (didn’t see a bloke all night) have been drinking gin all night. I’m just assuming that gin affects everyone like it does me, making one laid back, attentive, timely and respectful, obviously. Not “way raw” (© Elle R, 2014)...

  1. The Salt Yard group have expanded their food empire with the Ember Yard, combining Spanish and Italian tapas dishes for the hungry Soho socialites. As is to be expected, the food is extremely tasty (similar level to the other Salt Yard establishments) and service great...

    Nomface :: Ember Yard, London

    Ember Yard is a new restaurant from the Salt Yard Group who also run popular small plate inspired eateries Salt Yard, Dehesa and Opera Tavern in London. The latest venture is just off Oxford Street on Berwick Street and occupies a large space with a downstairs bar. The inspiration for Ember Yard is taken from Spanish and Italian methods of cooking over charcoal. This is reflected by the majority of the dishes on the menu which are cooked on a custom built charcoal fired grill.

    I visited alone during the first week of its soft launch and was seated at the chefs counter which provided me first hand insight into the busy workings of the kitchen...

    Samphire and Salsify :: Ember Yard

    Ember Yard is the latest restaurant from the Salt Yard Group (they own Dehesa, Opera Tavern and Salt Yard). It resides in Berwick Street but in the less buzzy bit at the opposite end of the market.

    We were seated in the ground floor dining room which had quite a cold and sterile feel to it. The lack of any soft furnishings meant that when it got busy the place was really loud and echoey...

    Agent Restauranteur :: Ember Yard – W1F

    Little sister to Salt Yard, this Charcuterie Bar & Grill outshines all its siblings.

    Last Wednesday was not my first visit to Ember Yard. I went in December after it had just opened, with a couple of giggling girls and a poor lad en-tow, who suffered through several hours of female-centric chatter as we worked our way through the super cocktail list. Luckily (for everyone), both the food and drink is so good, the evening could’t possibly have been ruined for him. Just one of the reasons why I had no reservations about going again...

  1. Soho isn’t short of tapas restaurants – indeed, it’s an area of London absolutely overflowing with them. That hasn’t stopped a new one from opening though – Ember Yard, the latest restaurant from the group behind Salt Yard and Opera Tavern. Although it may appear similar to its stablemates at first glance, the menu not only has both Spanish and Italian influences but also focuses on dishes cooked over a charcoal grill.

    The Ember Yard charcuterie selection includes jamon iberico de bellota – cured slices of ham made from acorn-fed pigs...
