suitably decked out in a mix of tartan and golfing memorabilia. Its cosy, dark-green dining room is the real draw, especially with the log fire burning and a sea squall hammering the windows. Food
marries Scottish ingredients with the odd Gallic flourish – witness Firth of Forth mackerel with heritage potato salad, ginger and gooseberry relish. Meat and game take centre stage among the
mains, with top marks going to the fillet of beef with celeriac purée, chanterelle mushrooms, kale and a deep-fried haggis fritter. Desserts such as a dense apple cake let the side down, but the
big-hitting wine list – with French bins stretching back decades – more than makes amends.
