Square Meal Review of Drapers Arms ?

The splendid-looking Georgian property has a slick rustic-chic finish these days, with colours chosen from the Farrow & Ball palette, dark wood tables, nary a carpet in sight and a serious approach to food and drink – all tailor-made for the good folk of Barnsbury. Downstairs is where the pub action takes place, with excellent real ales and plenty of space for The Drapers to function as a local tavern; upstairs is for those who want to eat amid a little more sophistication in a room with gorgeous Georgian windows. The menu follows the theme of rustic refinement with British flavours you don’t see every day – perhaps grouse and prune pie, grilled squid with kohlrabi and green sauce, or slow-roast pork belly with lentils and black cabbage, followed by patriotic puds and Neal’s Yard cheeses.

As we pulled up outside it looked beautiful; the the sort of quintessentially British pub that you could only dream about having as your local. As I’d heard many a good thing about the food I decided to take my parents along for a spot of dinner...

  1. Although I had been to the Drapers Arms before it was for a wedding. I didn’t write it up though as critically judging someone’s wedding is weird and wrong. This time I was attending a birthday, I was told the staff were great when booking the area for the last minute request. It is a foodie pub and therefore a birthday party with increasing numbers and loud minglers not always great for the diner. It was a Friday evening and sunny so expected there to be a crush, and although busy at the entrance with the large bar the garden was relatively empty...
