Combining sound Italian food with a gallery of contemporary art and photography, buzzy Da Scalzo brings a welcome dash of class to a rundown area opposite Victoria coach station. Housed in a listed
redbrick building that was once a church hall, this open-plan bar/restaurant serves early-bird breakfasts as well as a keenly priced menu of pizzas, pasta, salads and trattoria mains. Standards
such as tagliatelle carbonara or veal escalope with Marsala won’t win any awards for originality, but the food is tasty and it comes with genuinely warm, friendly service. Da Scalzo’s owners
founded the Patisserie Valerie chain, so you would expect some tempting sweet stuff to finish – perhaps
tiramisu or rustic apple tart with mascarpone cream. Gluggable wines by the carafe are also appreciated. Regular private viewings and talks by exhibiting artists are well worth checking out.
