Tucked away in stunning Ashford, this charming 17th-century whitewashed pub has been in Debbie Shaw’s family for a generation, and with help from chef/husband Carl she administers cheer, beer and
great food in traditional surroundings – the floors are flagged, the walls are wonky and there are Robinson’s ales on tap (Unicorn Best or 1892 Dark, for example). Carl makes everything in-house
and his menu changes regularly – so expect anything from duck, smoked bacon and pistachio terrine or baked monkfish with sweet chilli sauce to rhubarb mousse with Cognac ice cream. They once tried
to remove their legendary Stockport pie from the menu, but faced a minor revolt and had to re-instate it. There are a number of terrific walks from the door and a big, safe garden at the back – so
bring your canine chum, he’s more than welcome.
