Briciole is the brainchild of chef Maurizio Morelli, who has gained a reputation among knowledgeable fans of Italian food at fancy-pants Latium in Fitzrovia. By contrast, informality is the name of
the game here – so expect a neighbourhood trattoria vibe, charming service and easy prices, with a ‘gastronomia’ (deli/café) attached. The name means ‘breadcrumbs’, so it’s no surprise that artisan
baked goods feature strongly on the long menu (focaccia bruschetta with burrata, aubergines and olives, say), while the tapas-style approach also yields soft slices of smoked tuna, and ravioli
filled with succulent veal in a textbook sage and butter sauce. Veggies are notably well served, classic desserts include tiramisu and affogato, and there are some terrific regional wines by the
glass. Alternatively, do some shopping and bag a table in the adjoining deli for coffee, pastries, charcuterie and cheeses (to eat in or takeaway).
When I heard about the opening of Briciole I knew I had to try it in my desperate and thus far not successful search for a decent and non pretentious neighbourhood Italian.
Briciole is located in the non-fashionable part of Marylebone, close to Edgware Road tube station, and even with Sat Nav not very easy to find. You enter in a small deli/wine bar area which opens into a rustic dining room. Initially we were rather unsure about Briciole. The plates that were carried past us while we were waiting for our table to be cleared didn’t look all that appetising and we spend some time admiring the very tacky and obviously fake bricks that were covering one of the walls.
