Square Meal Review of Bone Daddies ?

Ex-Zuma chef Ross Shonhan has hit upon a winner with this funky, rock’n’roll izakaya –a cheap-eats standout staffed by a bevy of ‘charming enthusiasts’. Japanese posters, rows of multi-coloured saké bottles, communal benches and wooden tables set the mood as AC/DC blares out of the speakers and Soho hipsters set about perusing the snappy menu. Small plates of salmon sashimi with shiso, lime and soy or soft-shell crab in green chilli and ginger sauce are perfect with an ice-cold beer, Asian-style cocktail or a shot of flavoured saké. But this is first and foremost a hip ramen joint, dominated by Shonhan’s intensely savoury, slow-cooked ‘bone broths’ laden with noodles, vegetables, herbs and a gooey soft-boiled egg (the ‘tantanmen’ version with chicken mince is highly recommended). Needless to say, ‘queuing is obligatory’.

    The pork broth was indeed as rich as you may have heard of with a near cream like texture and full on meat flavour which ended up tasting more meaty than the accompanying pork slices!     Post-gig, late night eating at home generally consists of dodgy kebabs or overpriced Domino’s pizza. Not so in London where after the recent Arctic Monkeys gig at Finsbury Park I finally made it to Japanese ramen bar ‘Bone Daddies’, located just a short walk from Chinatown in Soho.

    Bone Daddies – run by Ross Shonhan who was previously head chef at Nobu – has been one of the trendiest and most talked about restaurants of the last 12 months.   1. I’ve been following the mania surrounding the opening of Bone Daddies Japanese ramen bar, which opened in November 2012. Bloggers have been raving about it, tweeters have been tweeting meet-ups and I have been dying to get down to check it out for myself.

    When I found the little alley off Berwick Street, a throng of hungry diners had made it well before me and were queuing outside on a cold January evening.

  1. Bone Daddies is one of the most blogged about restaurants in London. I’ve read countless reviews and it’s been on my list to try for a while. I’ve had ramen before but I’ve never been a huge fan. The broths were always too watery and filled with flavourless ingredients but Bone Daddies has completely changed my opinion.

    YUMMEI :: Bone Daddies - Soho - London

    When you're heart broken nothing tastes good.

    But Bone Daddies really knows how to soothe a wounded soul.

    He know's exactly what to do to cheer you up.

    A) he blasts classic rock at you, it's so loud that you have to raise your voice to be heard; and it's too loud to even hear yourself think. Perfect.

    B) he feeds you a huge, stonking bowl of steaming tonkotsu ramen - everything tastes better when it's bad for you...

    Drifting Epicure :: Bone Daddies

    It was about time that London got its own ramen eateries and it happened 2012, not one but three: Shoryu, Tonkotsu and Bone Daddies. Yesterday I finally made it to the last one I haven’t tried yet: Bone Daddies. I must say that it has most character of the three ramen places. John Fogerty’s “Bad Moon Rising” was streaming in the room when I entered. On the wall was a collage of B&W photos of Japanese rockabillies, like those I saw in Harajuku when I was in Tokyo a few years ago. I don’t know how busy it usually is since I came late afternoon and didn’t need to wait for a seat. Tables are shared here as opposed to the other two ramen restaurants...

    Saying it straight :: Bone Daddies.

    I asked the very lovely happy smiley chappie what I should have from the menu. Obviously I had heard of the Tonkotsu ramen, with spring onion, chasu pork and the 20-hour pork bone broth, but happy smiley chappie tells me to ignore the fact that this is their bestseller and instead to order the Tantanmen.

    This is described as noodles with sesame, chilli, pork mince, bok choy and chicken bone broth...

    Nomface :: Bone Daddies, London

    In the mood for ramen I attempted to catch a quick bowl after work one night at Bone Daddies, a black fronted ramen shop on Peter Street in Soho and quickly done a u turn when I saw about 30 people queuing outside. I don’t know why but if I can’t have something then it makes me want it more and I duly returned the next day just after the lunch crowd to a half empty restaurant.

    The Food Connoisseur :: Rock n Roll – Bone Daddies

    I remember just two years ago I was complaining about the lack of ramen shops available in London. I even asked Eatnoodleslovenoodles at the time, and he only seems to know of one place in London. Now ramen has been exploding the scene, Bone daddies were the second place I went to some time last year. The first attempt on a Friday night we saw queues all around the block. My friend and I just turned our backs and walked away to eat somewhere else. The following week on a Monday evening I managed to get seats within 15-20 mins by the window.

    Ross Shonhan former head chef of Zuma and Nobu is behind bone daddies. The place is full of high stools, and I did found it a little claustrophobic sitting in between 4 people by the window...

    London - Girl About Town :: Bone Daddies

    If you haven't heard of Bone Daddies yet, it's not a rib shack or a steakhouse as the name might immediately suggest; it's a newcomer to London's burgeoning noodle scene. However if you're a foodie then you'll already know that Aussie Ross Shonhan, formerly head chef at Zuma and Nobu, has combined his love of Japanese food with the party-hard vibe of Soho and opened a no-reservation ramen restaurant where the pork bone broth base is cooked for 20 hours.This place is also nothing like the exquisite, temple-food calm of nearby udon restaurant Koya; Bone Daddies is loud and kicking, with classic rock blaring and conversations buzzing from Soho's finest, squashed together at communal tables and knocking back the sake and cocktails. The tiny interior is stripped back and decorated with pictures of Japanese rockabillies; you're not going to want to perch on one of the stools for an entire evening but it's a perfect place to start a night out, or to end one.We started with the soft shell crab. This was an immediate winner; deliciously crisp with a delicately soft interior, served with a punchy green chilli and ginger dip. Now is probably a good time to tell you that if you're not a fan of spicy food, let the staff know and ask for recommendations as the flavours here are big, bold and in your face.The staff, on the other hand, are incredibly friendly and chatty and will happily help with anything you need. To drink we had some warm sake, served in a flask sitting in hot water, plus a fresh carrot and ginger juice; both were good.For mains we went for the T22, a chicken bone broth base with soy ramen, chicken and cock scratchings - don't worry, they are in fact little nuggets of crispy fried chicken skin and add an interesting crunch to the dish - and the Tantanmen, dan-dan noodles piled in a chicken bone broth with pork mince, sesame, chilli and bok choy.There are lots of options for customising your food; you can order extra meat, vegetables, egg or noodles from the menu (we did try an extra egg in the T22 but I doubt you'd want extra noodles) plus there is a fabulous range of condiments on the table including garlic and presses, and a sesame grinder. You can even order a pipette of pork fat to add flavour but I honestly don't think it needs it; my Tantanmen was wonderful, a rich and creamy sesame  base and a big chilli kick, perfectly cooked egg and spicy pork adding taste and texture.Bone Daddies is a welcome addition to a part of London already blessed with some of the best restaurants around; my visit was an early evening pre-drinking stop, but I can see this becoming a staple for late night hangover prevention.     Over the Hype :: Bone Daddies

  1. There have been a lack of restaurant post from me recently. Too many night shifts over Christmas period and with hectic work schedule were to blame.     I was meeting a friend for a girly afternoon in Soho yesterday and we decided to pop into Bone Daddies Ramen Bar for a quick spot of lunch. They have a 'no reservations policy' and the restaurant just happens to be on my bucket list of places to try. So it all worked out rather well!

    The restaurant is the brainchild of Ross Shonhan, former head chef at Zuma and Nobu - both excellent Japanese restaurants, so you know this will be good! Ramen has been one of the many trends to hit the London food scene this year and the opening of Bone Daddies just before winter could not be more perfectly timed. What better comfort food than a bowl of steaming hot broth?...

    Ramen, eh? This year’s burger or what? To be fair, that is an all too easy and not that fair statement to make. Since January there have been 4 dedicated ramen places that have opened; 2 in the last month. The first recent opening was Bone Daddies in Soho; the second Shoryu, on Lower Regent St just past Picadilly Circus. I will try to get to Shoryu on my next post if the combination of Winter, heating and pudding in front of the TV don’t overtake me, first!...

    My first ever taste of the Japanese noodle broth called ramen was at Tonkotsu and what a way to lose my ramen virginity – I loved it! Since then London has become rather obsessed with the stuff and its popularity has rocketed, meaning ramen bars are opening left right and centre.
