The Black Sheep’s owners run a nearby farm, & meat from their home-reared Aberdeen Angus cattle, rare-breed sheep & pigs finds its way onto the menus at this airy first-floor restaurant in Haverfordwest’s landmark Shire Hall. Wood floors & simple rustic furniture create a laid-back vibe, which is matched by relaxed & chatty service. The cooking has big flavours & a rustic edge, pulling in ideas & flavours from Europe & beyond. Starters of salmon ballottine with home-cured gravadlax or spiced charred aubergine with toasted nuts, tzatziki & flatbread are typical of the scope. Mains run from hearty braised ox cheeks with parsnip gratin & a rich gravy to a north Indian lamb curry with braised ‘dirty rice’. The kitchen also serves up ‘gourmet’ burgers, & kids have their own menu.
