SquareMeal Review of Bangers Bar & Grill

Bronze Award

Following a refurb, this basement branch of the Davy’s stable has brightened up its image: a mirrored staircase now leads down to the spacious bar area, which sports a sympathetic mix of contemporary design and classic Davy’s features. Now billed as a ‘Bar & Grill’, Bangers also touts a revamped menu of updated British classics ranging from fish and triple cooked chips to slow-cooked chicken leg in red wine, shallots, bacon and mushrooms with roasted garlic and spring onion mash. Steaks and the eponymous bangers also feature, along with puds such as sticky toffee pudding. British real ales and continental lagers are alternatives to the beefed-up Davy’s wine list – a satisfying whistle-stop tour of the major growing regions, headed up by keenly priced own-label selections. Bangers also boasts four private spaces, including the aptly named Penguin Room.

Enjoyable but......

Lunch with my 'children', for one of their 30th birthday. Reasonable food but poor steak sandwich for me - little meat, much salad and cold ciabatta. Could have been so much better quality and value for money. Have frequented Davys across london for 40+ years - atmosphere always good and pleasant service generally. This won't put me off returning but it was disappointing (though i didn't mention it at the time). Other food/wine was good, reportedly.

Great venue
I had a meal here with a friend on a Wednesday lunchtime and it was just what we were looking for. The place was packed but they found us a lovely table in the downstairs restaurant. The food was delicious and good value (we had Bangers and Mash and a superfood salad, very healthy!), and the drinks list had a wide range of soft options as well as some lovely local beers and of course a comprehensive selection of wines. Will definitely return.

Awful food
I visited Davy / Bangers @ Wilson St as a group for our Team Xmas meal on the 12th Dec 2014. Smoked salmon rillette: One table spoon of SS rillette on a half piece of stale bread. Not a great starter in taste or portion size. Sirloin steak in creamy peppered sauce: menu described as "Juicy and flavoursome". Couldn't be further from the truth!! Tough and chewy to cut even with a steak knife, and even tougher to eat! The pepper sauce was not peppery at all, but it provided some lubricant to aid the chewing process.... I gave up eating halfway and left the steak alone. The vegetables (carrots, swede & sprouts) was boiled to death i.e. totally mushy and lacked flavour. In hindsight, I think I was lucky, the turkey slice looked worse (and totally tasteless too according to my colleague!) Chocolate Espresso pot: Best of the worse. Petite but tasty. The marshmallow was suppose to be toasted, but I couldn't detect any sign of toasting at all. The above Xmas Menu A costed £34.95, but luckily, the Company I was worked for picked up the tab otherwise I would have refused to pay for such an awful meal. Seriously, spend your cash somewhere else, this place is awful for food.

Relaxed venue with good food and friendly service
Picked predominantly as a venue close to Liverpool street station I wasn't sure what to expect on a Thursday. Bringing my parents I was slightly wary of the city vibe as we came through the packed bar but in fact it was very spacious and more relaxed out in the dining room.Though it did takes us a few minutes to locate someone to acknowledge us and show us our booked table the service was faultless from that point on. Our waitress was very accommodating and made an effort to update our Davy's card, offer us Prosecco and look after dietary requests. The only issue with the menu was one cheese being unavailable for the cheese board, but the food was good English fare. My party didn't exactly stretch the menus range but I can say the sausages were very generous in size and the salted caramel ice cream delicious. Apparently the ale was very acceptable, which was a relief as my father won't eat anywhere that doesn't have at least two on tap. Will definitely book again.

Hire more staff
Went this evening to meet friends for drinks. Waited at the bar for 12 minutes to be served. Not served which is bad enough but neither was there any acknowledgement that I was waiting or even existed, No “Be with you shortly” no “Sorry to keep you”. It wasn't especially busy – maybe 20 or 30 people in the entire place – but the staff seemed to think that changing a barrel, checking the pressure and washing glasses were more important than serving a customer. So I left. And I won't go back. So the staff there should recognise that they're the cost base and we're the revenue without which they haven't got a job. And the management should hire some more staff. Or get some competent ones. Or both.

My first time to Bangers the other day (Tuesday 2nd Feb) to be precise, and was amazed that neither myself or my collegue had descovered this gem before. From the moment we walked in to the moment we walked out we were looked after. The food, I had the Sirloin and my collegue had a hugh 350g Rib Steaks were both as good as we had be told. Although neither of us were drinking that lunch time, the wine list and the beers on draught that were on offer were more than tempting. We both will most certinly be back.

Sorry, you cannot spend SquareMeal vouchers here yet.
