SquareMeal Review of Aubaine Marylebone

Chic all-dayer Aubaine takes advantage of French café culture’s hold over romance-starved Anglo-Saxons. Baskets of pain de campagne, subtly distressed wooden furniture & soft, flattering lighting would be enough to impress most people, even without the menu of breads, patisserie & viennoiserie, macarons, mille-feuilles and financiers… it’s enough to make you want to cough up six quid for a cup of Mariage Frères tea. But this mini chain of urbane cafés isn’t just good for a caffeine & sugar fix: breakfast & brunch gives way to a menu of fashionable Med-influenced fare, for example roast rack of lamb with a niçoise garnish, lobster spaghetti or Superfood salad with quinoa, roast butternut squash & alfalfa. They’re licensed too &, surprisingly, have some global wines slotted in amongst the French contingent.

Prices have risen and quality fallen
I have been visiting the Marylebone branch of Aubaine for a number of years and always especially enjoyed the prix fixe menu. However, after going back this weekend after a long break away, I was shocked to see prices have risen quite substantially and the dishes they are producing are much smaller and no where near the prices they are now charging. I felt utterly ripped off this weekend after paying £15.something for a handful of salad and the stingiest amount of ham (Ham hock & mixed leaf salad) and then a bit of filo pastry the size of my hand covered with a very thin layer of beetroot and what I can only assume started out as a 2 point coin's worth of goat's cheese (Heritage beetroot & goat’s cheese tart). It also came to about £7 for 2 very standard coffees. After about 4 years of regularly visiting, I will not be back.

Very poor service, inattentive management...plenty of other choices in Marylebone
Had dinner here with a party of 5 with a bill that totalled about 200 pounds. Value for money was very poor. The physical structure and ambience was great, and the food generally OK, but the service was very poor. It was surprising that the restaurant only had perhaps 4-5 tables with patrons, yet the staff seemed to be busy doing something else rather than being attentive to the tables. Parts of the orders were forgotten, and the manager seemed more on the side of the staff rather than listening to the issues. The tart was served cold...clearly pulled out of the freezer. For a sure bet try La Frommagerie across the street if you want French. I won't be back.
