Square Meal Review of 34 ?

Initially it may have struggled to compete with siblings Scott’s and J Sheekey in the glamour stakes, but this Caprice Holdings outpost is now a firm fixture in every A-lister’s address book after Kate Moss threw her 40th birthday bash here. It’s a handsome space, classily decked out with orange banquettes, parquet floors and monogrammed cutlery that look the part for both business and high-end pleasure whatever the hour. “Great style and good food for grown-ups” is the name of the game. A custom-made charcoal grill sends out prime steaks from prime sources worldwide, with haute comfort provided by the likes of “fantastic” lobster macaroni or burgers with truffled fried egg. Also expect Caprice Holdings classics such as succulently spicy grilled octopus with chorizo and roseval potatoes or meaty griddled prawns with punchy chimichurri sauce and Padrón peppers. It’s expensive, but not outrageously so, and a cracking weekend brunch (buttermilk pancakes, lobster omelette) keeps the good times rolling.

  1. You really can't go wrong with any of the Caprice Group restaurants. Scotts, J Sheekey and the Ivy are all stalwarts that have been in London for many years. Restaurant 34 is the youngest of the siblings, opening in November 2011. The restaurant is a celebrity hotspot and it is the restaurant of choice for stars such as Kate Moss, Katy Perry, Sean Penn and Ellie Goulding.

    Its not easy to spot in its location just off Grosvenor Square but look out for the large leopard just outside the front door...

    Saying it straight :: 34. It’s a Caring Formula.

    Ask for a round table. You might otherwise have to move three times, like I did on the visit before this one. They favour the run of tables close together style of dining, so that you get to know your neighbour, whether or not you want to. A round table will take you away from all that. A round table like the one shared by B and I, with a lamp in the middle and a cord attached, draped, somewhat bizarrely, across the table.
    If I’m not wrong (and I often am, ask anyone who knows me) this is the first restaurant in the Caring Group that he has opened on his own. The others in the Caring stable, which includes J Sheekey,...

    The Food Judge :: 34. It’s a Caring Formula.

    It’s very much in the Caring style. Plush, great service, expensive and comfortable. It’s a lovely Art Deco fit-out, with decent art on the walls. It oozes comfortable. Forties music was playing at the unseasonably early time that we sat down for dinner.
    Given that the Forties is my era in so many ways, this made me put on my happy face. No mean feat, given the day I’d had in the office. At the time when normal people would eat, say about 7.30, the Baby Grand in the corner sprang to life, with some jazz classics. I approve of this, because I am not right next to it, as I was last time, when I had to communicate...
