SquareMeal Review of The Salt Room

Silver Award

“A real show-off place” overlooking Brighton’s seafront and iconic West Pier ruins, this sibling of the meat-tastic Coal Shed is a star in its own right. Located behind a sleek black facade, The Salt Room mixes exposed brick and bare lightbulbs with a menu that majors in locally-sourced seafood and meat roasted over coal. ‘Whole fish to share’ is one of the standouts and fans rate the “outstanding” ‘surfboard’ piled with grilled shellfish from the south coast and Scotland.

Elsewhere, the Josper oven delivers some “exquisite steaks” for the red-blooded brigade and even a couple of options for vegetarians. Other notable fish dishes include lemon sole with spiced potted crab butter, cucumber and seaweed roasted potatoes, and Gigha halibut with fennel, samphire and kimchi hollandaise, though really you can’t go far wrong. The weekday set menu offers good value if you’re happy with a choice between two dishes for each course, while the Sunday sharing menu is more of a special treat (though kids under seven do eat free, if that sways it).

Desserts such as peach melba and arctic roll are pleasingly nostalgic, though we suggest you round off with 'a taste of the pier' – a chunk of West Pier driftwood brimming with delights such as doughnuts, fudge, pâte de fruits and chocolate ‘pebbles’.  The bar’s a good shout too with plenty of trendy wines, including fine wines by the glass, though it’s also worth noting the cracking BYO deal on Monday evenings (corkage £5). Slick, friendly service and a lovely terrace for ocean-gazing during the summer months add to the overall buzz of this popular Brighton restaurant.

About

Part of The Black Rock Group (that also runs the likes of Tutto, The Coal Shed and Burnt Orange) The Salt Room is highly regarded in Brighton for cooking local fish and produce over coals, as well as boasting fantastic views of Brighton seafront and the iconic West Pier. You’ll find the restaurant a short walk from Brighton Palace Pier, just by Brighton i360.

Inside, the restaurant has adopted a classic relaxed fine dining look - polished wood tabletops match a smart herringbone floor, and the colour palette is a mixture of rich blues and gleaming copper. A series of large glass double doors opens out onto The Salt Room’s expansive terrace, which is understandably popular in the summer months (though it is also covered and therefore fairly weatherproof all year round).

The Salt Room menu has something for everything, but undeniably, the focus is on quality seafood cooked over coals. Kick off with starters like tuna sashimi with truffle ponzu, barbecued mackerel with pickled cucumber and plum hoisin, and wild Argentinian red prawns with pil pil sauce and chive oil. The restaurant offers a handful of main plates, but the most popular items are the sharing platters, whether it’s the Surfboard of grilled and steamed shellfish with fries, or whole cuts of meat and fish to share, cooked over coals and serves with sides like french fries, seaweed salad or tenderstem broccoli.

The same seasonality and innovation that is applied to the menu finds its way into the cocktails, with a selection of drinks changing through the year. Cocktails that trend towards earthy herbs and sea spices, like the Mad Monks (benedictine, green chartreuse, Cocchi Americano, citrus and Peychaud’s bitters).

Awful service, avoid at all costs

Our experience at The Salt Room Brighton on December 23rd was marred by an unpleasant encounter with the general manager. Despite booking for 5 adults, we were initially seated at a table for 4. When kindly requesting a larger table, the general manager displayed extreme rudeness, refusing to assist and suggesting we leave with his hasty and sarcastic 'au revoir' as we stood on the restaurant's main floor looking for a solution. His dismissive attitude tarnished the dining experience, making it the most appalling service we've encountered, especially disheartening considering the restaurant's prior positive reviews. Avoid at all costs.

Called a "c**t” by staff for not paying full discretionary service charge

The night was good the food was average to good and the service was again very average. The reason for the 1 star is that when the bill arrived, which was well over £300 for 4 of us a discretionary 12.5% service charge was added which was about £40. The squid was chewy, the service wasn't very attentive and things that were offered did not arrived. As a result we paid the entire bill in full but only paid half of the discretionary service charge.
After we had paid the waiter returned to the table and said only half the service charge had been paid. We explain our reasons. On leaving the restaurant the front of house staff on the desk refused to get our coats and made us get them ourselves, were shaking their heads at us in disgust but by far the worst part by a whole 9 yards was the male member of staff on the desk saying "C**ts" under his breath as we walk out. I was absolutely stunned and one of our group challenge the staff member. I wouldnt expect this type of aggressive language in McDonalds let alone after spending £300. Will never return and I'll go out of my way to make sure I share this experience with everyone I know.

Disappointing

Easy to book. It was on a Tuesday however. Asked to sample wines. Cheaper ones fine. £40 bottle was told they can't ask they don't have a bottle open. Poor. Beef tartare starter was just tasteless blobs of jelly. For main all five in the party had seafood platter. Lots of over cooked rubber tasting muscles. Very quick to clear table. Had to ask for clean cutlery as they had cleared it away before I had finished meal. When I complained to manager he was more interested in cashing up till. Poor experience wasn't value for money. Won't visit again. Much better places to eat in Brighton

Amazing cocktails, beautiful oysters, wonderful seafood, brilliant atmosphere. Can sit on the terrace overlooking Brighton Beach. In the summer, it is wonderful. Staff and service are fabulous too.

From the moment we walked in, until the moment we walked out, everything was perfect. The food was outstanding for the price, the staff were attentive, but not pushy, and they allowed us to sit for five hours.
