Teas to tease

This Afternoon Tea Week, we pick a selection of London's best and quirkiest alternative teas

Mad Hatter’s afternoon tea
You’ll be grinning like a Cheshire cat after this afternoon tea experience at Sanderson. Jelly ‘Wonderland’ follows ‘Drink Me’ potion and by the time you’ve finished the lot, you might struggle to find your way out of the rabbit hole.

Enjoy the traditional afternoon tea experience overlooking the ciapital, 31 floors up at Aqua Shard. Sandwiches include an Earl Grey tea-smoked salmon, cucumber, Oscietra caviar and dill scented cream variety.

Oriental afternoon tea
If finger sandwiches and scones aren’t your bag, plump for Grand Imperial’s oriental take on afternoon tea. Think dumplings and ducks – even ‘special chocolate dim sum’ for pud.

Gents don’t want sandwiches and cakes, do they? They want burgers, whiskey and cigars. Thankfully, this tea experience at the Sanctum Soho is not strictly limited to blokes, though it is called Gents Afternoon Tea and features those ‘manly’ items.

The name says it all, really. This alternative afternoon option at Oxo Tower Brasserie is more parfaits, fools, mousses and juices. Cocktails are an important component and if you like eating pink things, you can have a bag of pink treats to take away.

Sushi afternoon tea
If you don’t really like afternoon tea, this offering from Ichi is perfect: it’s sushi, flavoured teas and Japanese cakes.

Afternoon tea bus tour
Why stay in one place? Hop on this old Routemaster and take tea with a tour. London traffic may actually be a blessing – you won’t go fast enough to spill your tea.
