Price

Indicative ‘entry level’ price of a two-course meal, including a mid-priced starter & main, vegetables (if extra), half a bottle of house wine, coffee, cover charge, service & VAT. Please note that prices are only an indication of how much one should expect to spend if eating from the a la carte menu. It is, of course, possible to eat for less as well as more (probably much more). Where there is a difference in price between lunch & dinner, we quote the dinner price. Where a restaurant insists on three set courses, we base our price on three rather than the usual two courses.

Wine

Price of a bottle of house wine or the cheapest available on the wine list. Where the charge differs from restaurant to bar, the restaurant price has been quoted.

Champagne

Price of a bottle of house Champagne or the cheapest on the list. Where a restaurant only serves sparkling wine, cava, prosecco or none at all, the entry will not appear.

Opening hours

Last orders rather than closing times are given. Where a restaurant has different opening hours to the wider establishment, these have been outlined after the letter ‘R’. (‘B’ indicates the specific opening times of the bar.)

Wine list

A popular innovation we introduced in 2005, giving additional information on the choice & range of wines at eateries with particularly notable lists. The BEST BUY bottles are our recommendations for those wines combining quality with good value.

Private rooms

An indication of the seating capacity of any available private rooms (up to a maximum of 50 people). Larger private rooms & a full range of venues can be found on the dedicated Square Meal Venues & Events section of the website.

The reviews

Square Meal reviews are independent reports, mixing opinion from food journalists & comments from readers (see note above & editorial policy below).

Editorial Policy
