A wedding photography revolution?

(menu)

One of the photographers we use to shoot events for our magazine has just announced on twitter that he's moving into wedding photography and is looking to revolutionise the market. No extortionate prices, not charging per print etc. He explains it all in his blog: satureyes.com/blog/archives/450
What do we think of this move?
Let us know your thoughts.

Wedding photography is often shunned as being the bottom of the rung stuff! I couldn't disagree more.

As someone who has chosen their photographer for next year I luckily found mine through the events tweet ups, However before that I found no one offering what I was looking for, arty, relaxed, soft images showing the feel of the day.

What's more I cant bare the thought of the stiff formal piccys, Id much prefer a piccy of a glance from dad to me, or a tender hug from one family member to another or a hearty belly laugh, These are the images that are priceless and only a talented photographer will capture.

I think its great that Rick Bronks is now branching out into this area and I will definitely be recommending him to friends and peers. The wedding industry has just earned themselves a dynamic and focused new supplier

His prices are fantastic and his ethics exactly how they should be.

I wish him the very best of luck.

Thanks for the comments Lisa – very kind of you.
I've posted the same link into some photography forums to see what the ‘experts’ have to say – LOADS of them are super defensive.

I seem to have hit a nerve – I suggested that the price they charge doesn't represent the quality of work and they tend to pray on vulnerable people at a vulnerable time in their lives.. and seemingly find loads of money to spend on photos.

Why they don't like it – is because I'm blowing the lid on all this.

They work on the premise 'Where there's mystery there is margin' – the brides are naive about the process and sometimes very nervous about choosing the right photographer -so the photographer can maximise their profits based on this.

Personally – I think its plain wrong!

I'm not surprised that a lot of wedding photographers are super defensive! I was really shocked by the lack of options for what I considered a reasonable budget and ended up spending a lot more money than I intended just because the lack of transparency equated to a lack of trust. The right photographer is so important in capturing an event – and they don't come much bigger than a wedding – so the more professionals offering quality work the better. Good luck to you Rick.

I agree with Rick – though I have to say I didn't regret a single penny of the money we paid our wedding photographer, despite being significantly more expensive than Rick's very reasonable price. Check out the wonderful Duncan Kerridge. Also remember that you can scan in the prints if you know someone who has a very high-res scanner – of course you still have to get them printed off but cheaper than ordering a fresh set.
