Should we still be spending money on events?

With the recession biting, my boss is talking about cutting our events budget, in particular the Christmas party. Personally I think it's more important than ever to treat your staff when times are tough.

I agree, if employers want loyal and productive employees they need to feel recognised and rewarded. A great event to include a Christmas party does just that and makes people feel part of a team. In the long term it may help a company through a tough recession. At the same time event organisers need to be creative and use their events budget wisely!

A sure fire way to let staff know how you feel about them (either way) is the Christmas party. It doesn't even have to be expensive – with so many good joiner parties around – but it's got to be well thought-out and certainly not seem like the budget option.
