Is ‘hotel dining dead’ – surely not?!

The Guardian's Word of Mouth blog today poses the question ‘Is hotel dining dead?’ (guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2009/jul/21/food-dining-hotel-restaurants) Surely not! So there might be hotels that cling onto their dreary old-school dining rooms but others are investing in ground-breaking catering facilities that help establish new trends in the restaurant industry. Take Chef's Tables, for instance: many of the best (see earlier thread at recommend-me-a-venue/any-new-chefs-tables) are in hotels. What are your thoughts on the issue? Please share your views and recommendations!

A friend of mine used to say 'you don't sleep in a restaurant' to describe his horror of hotel dining rooms but I agree it's totally changed now. There are definitely still some hushed, overpriced relics out there – especially in the countryside – but top hotels know they have to have a top restaurant (& bar) to compete these days.

I recently ate at Whatley Manor excellent; but sometimes you fined yourself trying to have an intimate dinner in a dining room full of large tables; obviously guests staying at the hotel for a conference or tables for one!
