Hospitality dress code

I was at Turnberry at The Open on Friday and was the only person in the whole hospitality village wearing a skirt (apart from the hostesses!) I remember reading that Jaeger and Keith Prowse have got together on an etiquette and styling guide for 2009 hospitality – I think it's a great idea, as each event varies so much. The dress code for most things is often ‘smart casual’ but what does that actually mean??

I think a good host should elaborate beyond your usual ‘smart casual’ dress code descriptions. If you're able to tell guests things like ‘most people wear trousers’ or 'there's a lot of walking involved so wear flat shoes' it shows you know the event.

I attended the Air Tattoo on Sunday and the dress code was smart casual and clearly stated no jeans. However it was pouring with rain most of the day and we were often outside watching the impressive air displays. Many people myself included opted for linen trousers and flat shoes; only to find some guests on other tables in smart jeans. To be honest, they looked far better at the end of the day and jeans were far more in keeping with the event and our ‘British weather’.

‘Smart casual’ in increasingly meaningless in my view – especially for women. One thing I've started to do is have a look at websites for events to get a better idea. Goodwood have got a really nice video on their website showing Glorious Goodwood in action. I haven't been before so it was interesting to see a LOT of men in Panama hats (as I'd heard) & a fair number of ladies in hats.
