Three cheers for D&D for binning automatic service charges!

… I've just read that D&D will be putting an end to adding service automatically to the bill – so now we'll be able to actually leave what we think is deserved. I for one would much rather give the best staff more and the rubbish ones less – otherwise what's the point? Let's hope the rest of the big fish follow suit asap…

Finally – It's a great idea. Let's face it we all know that very rarely the extra £35 or so that gets added to the bill for service goes directly to the staff so think it's about time. I'm not a mean guy but never really enjoyed having to leave another £20 so I know the staff actually receive something for their hard work. The only time I actually asked a manager to subtract the charge so I could leave a cash equivalent for the staff he looked like I'd slapped his mother.

This is no guarantee that what you leave will go to the staff. Credit card tips are the property of the restaurant, not the waiters and the new min wage law just made restaurants find more covert ways of pocketing service. Even cash can end up in management's or owner's pockets. I would be interested to see squaremeal add a new list to their site “Restaurants without service charge”. I would naturally include those that still add service for tables of 5/6 people or the list would be empty.
