Do you tip, even when it is a bad experience?

I recently went to Strada (Leamington Spa) we had been a couple of times before and
both times left feeling like it was not quite right. I dined (walk in not reservation) with my Wife (Who's Birthday it was) & daughter and on arrival the Manager (Man
with thick Glasses) came over to us with no greeting he just looked at
us, we asked politely if he had a table for 2.5 and he picked up some
menu's and strutted off in the direction of a table in the middle of the
restaurant, we had no idea if we were supposed to follow him. When he
reached his destination he simply put the menu's on the table and looked
at us as though we should have known to follow him. The Assistant
Manager had a similar attitude through service also which is no shock if
that is how the Manager conducts himself (Maybe they had a had a tiff
before service). The Food was very nice indeed, we were not checked back on during or after the starters in fact even when they were cleared they
were just taken away. The mains arrived after we chased them, we were
not keeping track of the time but it had become uncomfortable enough for us to know that our main course was not forthcoming. We declined bread
and it was almost as though we were deemed cheap skates or at least that
was what I read from the I think Assistant Manageress’s facial
expression.

The more junior staff, two waitresses were working very nicely, they
smiled when passing but the Management team were less than welcoming,
almost as though they were managing Le Gaveroche or similar. It won't
surprise you to hear that I work in the industry which is the only reason
I took the time to bring this to their attention, if it were my
Management team I think I would be operating a Mystery Diner service or
similar to ensure that a simple meet & greet / welcome was stamping a great 1st impression on all of their guests on arrival.

I would describe the service as almost efficient with a lack of
personality bearing on almost on rude…
Other guests were kind of looking around uncomfortably also.

There were also several other families dining, but it felt like families were not welcome, or maybe it was everybody who was not welcome. I know
this was not just a bad day as I have seen it a couple of times before at this restaurant although not to the same degree…

The worst thing is, a very nice young lady bough the bill to the table and we tipped 10%.

What is that all about?

We wrote in to Head Office and received a fairly standard offer of a £20.00 voucher which I simply have not taken any further. Do you tip the staff when the Managers are terrible?

Do the staff get the tips…

As I worked in restaurants, I do struggle with the concept of punishing ALL staff just because of a single isolated incident… However, if it was the manager that was rude to me, that is a very different affair. If someone, actually anyone, was rude to me… I would verbally ‘take them down’ and remind them who the customer is and that the customer is king. Its not about being rude, shouting or losing your cool (which most people seem to think is a good way to assert your power) but its about being calm, stern and brutally honest about what you are not happy with. Pointless waiting til you have left the restaurant, because how will head office know what you went through, when they will only verify with the exact same staff that were rude to you. I would suggest you say you tell them that you expect some gesture of good will from them seeing as they were so rude to you. Having said that in certain situations, I find being direct comes easily to me, but I know that this isnt the case for everyone. But dont be afraid to get ‘value’ from your meal, most restaurants operate a food cost of 30%, so there is 70% for you to play with and if that means getting a comp dessert or even coffee (which costs them pennies) then do it! But ONLY if you are just! This way, you dont need to stiff the poor hard working staff who were nice to you and also you dont feel out of pocket!

Hi Sabrina,

It seems that we agree, I left the tip but was not happy about the experience at all.

To be honest I am not interested in good will following a bad experience at all I am only interested in good manners. If I have a bad meal I want the bad meal taken off the bill as that is what I am not happy with. To offer a £5.00 Dessert in Exchange for a £15.00 Main Course seems a little cheeky to me.

In fact when I replied to the Head Office for Strada I thanked them for their kind offer of a £20.00 voucher but suggested that I would be more gratefull if they were to simply let me know when they had sorted out their Management problems so that I might return for a nice experience (I am happy to pay for it) It was never about the money as we love to eat out.

Dismissive tactics are always employed, especially with Formulaic chain restaurants. I think they need to invest in paying staff higher salaries, so that they can demand the best service from them. Training wouldnt go a miss either!! Oh well, £20 is better than nothing, eh? I do love Strada's food though, it's one of the better high street chains.

The tip is for the whole service experience and if any aspects ‘kills’ it then I do not tip. I think the tip should be easily ‘won’ but certainly should not be a given.
