Tapas – where is the most authentic in London

(menu)

having been wholeheartedly disappointed, dejected and a little angry with the Fino experience on Saturday – mums birthday too – can any foodies out there please recommend a “tapas” or “tapas style” restaurant as I like them. That is to say
(a) excellent value
(b) gutsy cooking
(c) affordable decent spanish vino and
(d) a genuine sense of at least SOME region in Espana.
To assist, the type of stuff I love would include: spicy chorizos, casseroled rabbit and games, punchy seafood eg octopus, razor clams, unusual fish and assorted “sides” that complement eg wonderful fresh breads, dipping sauces and oils, potatoes with a diff, artichoke/asparagus style roasted veg. Anyway, didnt get ANYTHING close on Saturday. Help!

What a shame! Fino is more ‘Spanish fine dining’ than tapas, hence your experience. No atmopshere either which isn't what you'd expect from a Spanish restaurant – I was disappointed too.

I'm a big fan of good tapas: Brindisa in Borough Market or Barrafina in Soho are my favourites and the most authentic, both in food and in atmosphere. Neither are cheap but fairly priced given that the quality of ingredients is A+. I have heard great things about Morito in Exmouth Market too, though the cooking is Spanish/North African rather than traditional Iberian.

Viva tapas & enjoy!

Try Mar Terra, 14 Gambia Street, SE1. Right by Southwark tube station.

Totally authentic, Spanish owners (who are actually working in the restaurant), great Spanish wines, and if you are luck to go on a sunny warm afternoon, they have a little garden at the back.

We find the atmosphere better at lunch than dinner.

Not sure if I should give this one away.
There's a place on Harrow Road at the junction with Wood Lane, NW10 (number 869) called the Centro Galego de Londres. I think you can tell by the name it's authentic, it's open all day from midday and it has live music at the weekends. The food is great and very good value for money. And, of course, unlike most Tapas places in London, it is populated mostly by Spanish folk. Can't remember whether conejo is on the menu…

I like Meson Don Filipe on the Cut in Southwark. It is cramped, but great value. I used to work around there and I have spent many evenings sat at the central bar eating Tapas working our way through their incredibly reasonable wine list and pretty big Sherry list.

Saw Big Ben? Check. Supped a pint of warm ale in a pub? Check. Tasted bona fide fish and chips? You'll be lucky. Authentic London chippies are as rare as hens' teeth in the 'smoke these days.

I know this reply is a little late but you absolutely will not be disappointed by either of these

Barrica at Goodge Street. barrica.co.uk
or
Salt Yard also on Goodge Street saltyard.co.uk

Both bars are only a couple of doors away from each other. Both are very good but my tip is Salt Yard for the extra bit of presentation and I find slightly better atmosphere – sit upstairs or at the bar.

Hope you find them as good as I do.

Best

Simon
