I would love to know what Square Meal readers think of the ever popular group buying web site that seem to be everywhere at the moment. Groupon and Living Social are the biggest but Glamoo, Wowcher and Kenoir plus plenty more are all offering great discounts at restaurant all over London. Is has to be a good for everyone restaurants and consumer alike yes?

Having recently taken advantage of a £40 voucher priced at £20 for the a la carte menu at Cinammon Kitchen courtesy of the Spotlight section of Top Table, I am a big fan! Not been enticed by any of the Groupon offers thus far as the only ones that have interested me in terms of venue, have been somewhat limited in menu choice. But am keeping an open mind and daresay I will be tempted at some point.

But yes Peter, I agree that it is good for all involved.

I like the idea of group buying, it seems a win win for all, customers get better discounts as a group and businesses have lower risks, if enough people don't go for the discount no stock wasted and if lots go for it more money in the cash box.

Another, and I find better than Groupon is called KGB. They have a longer availability time than Groupon which you have to read and buy within just a few hours.

BUT you must read the small print very carefully indeed. In one case the promotional email said three courses and a LARGE glass of wine! When you clicked to buy it had become a SMALL glass. I called the restaurant and they already knew about the problem.

Now the psycology! If I was running that restaurant and somebody called just as I did, then I would have confirmed it was only intended to be a small glass BUT said that if I was to book then they would give me a large glass!

They did not make that offer and I did not book either. I also emailed KGB but they did not bother to reply to me!

Some of those offers are genuine and offer good value. They LOOK good but a tip from me! before you actually book take a couple of minutes to read reviews and in most cases they are NOT that good which of course is why they are having to heavily promote the place by these offers.

Then there is the “service” scam. Some places give 50% off the cost of food. Some ADD a service charge calculated at the FULL food cost and get very argumentative if you say it should be discretionary or that you dont think the service was good!

I have been looking at the Groupon website but have to say there is not that much that is really enticing. Far better are the offers on TopTable in my opinion, not because of their value, but because of the choice of restaurants and the fact you have all the reviews to base your decision on.

I have used Groupon for both restaurants and other items and found them to be great. I currently get their deals sent to me via comparethevoucher.com which saves getting lots of emails from the different group buying sites as they send the local deals from Groupon, KGB and livingsocial on one email each day.

Dose anyone know of any other daily deal/group buying sites?
