For the past few years, financial forecasters and fun sponges have been telling companies that they mustn’t be seen to be splashing cash on entertaining clients or staff. We must tighten our purse strings and knuckle down until this recession is over. But everyone knows just how important events such as the Christmas party are to staff morale. Rather than holding surreptitious underground events to keep the team sweet, an emerging trend is to combine meetings with a little reward afterwards. The plan? Work hard and play hard. Here at Square Meal, we put this ethos into practise at our Christmas party last year and combined work and play in one supersized office day out. It began with a ‘Blue Sky Thinking’ session for which the company was split into small groups. Where better to get our brains in gear on than the 29th floor of the Millbank Tower? Having spent the morning brainstorming and working in teams we then felt we had achieved something and deserved a pat on the back. To celebrate, we indulged in a little lunch (courtesy of the in-house catering team), a little fancy dress (Olympics-themed as as you can probably see from the pictures) and some obligatory party games (well it was Christmas after all). All this took place in the lofty surroundings of Altitude 360 (tel: 0843 658 5160). The space works as a dual-event venue largely due to its versatility. White walls act as a blank canvas to decorate as you please and partitions split the room into two – business on one side, pleasure on the other. By day, the room is light and airy with uninterrupted 360-degree views of the capital, allowing for plenty of thinking room. As the sun sets, the skyline makes an atmospheric backdrop for socialising.
