Top ‘plaice’ for Bridlington fish and chip shop

A Yorkshire fish and chip shop has been named Britain’s best at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2011, organised by Seafish, an industry body promoting sustainable seafood.

Fish and Chips at 149, in Bridlington, beat strong competition from the country-wide shortlist, which selected ten restaurants from different regions of Great Britain. Second place went to Peck Ish Fish and Chips in Camelford, Cornwall, while Seniors at Marsh Mill, Lancashire came runner-up.

The Observer’s restaurant critic Jay Rayner awarded the prizes at London’s Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel on 20 January. He called fish and chip shops ‘a vital part of our food culture’ and praised their ‘pioneering approach to fish stock sustainability’.

Fish and Chips at 149 was opened in 2008 by owners Matthew Silk and Tracy Poskitt, who have four decades of experience in the business. The judges commended all three winning businesses for their high-quality, responsibly sourced food, hard-working staff, outstanding customer service and community spirit.
