Rowley Leigh was founder and head chef of Notting Hill landmark restaurant Kensington Place for 20 years and prior to that spent eight years working for the Roux family at Le Gavroche, City restaurant Le Poulbot and as a food buyer for the group. Together with Charlie McVeigh, a former financial journalist at The Daily Telegraph who created Woody’s, the Bush Bar and Grill and The Westbridge, Leigh launched Le Café Anglais in Queensway at the tail end of 2007. With the interior matching the art deco grandeur of William Whiteley’s original department store, the food, meanwhile, is proudly European. At the stove is Colin Westal, who has worked with Leigh for the past 25 years and is responsible for serving food from noon until midnight. Leigh is also a cookery writer for the Financial Times.
