Surrey fans can speak of a glorious history, having won more than 20 county championships, but most of their success has been concentrated in two golden ages at the end of the 19th century and during the 1950s. But the Oval crowd must be wondering if they are in for a third purple patch of prolonged success having enjoyed recent joy on the field. The Oval - where England clinched the Ashes in 2005 - is hard to rival as a first-class cricket venue and quality players to grace the turf at county level in the last few years include Alec Stewart, Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe and Waqar Younis.
