Blog Reviews from Burgerac

I am Burgerac, a burger detective hot on the trail of the finest burger in town. Together with my dedicated team, we will visit London's burger-serving establishments to taste their offerings. We shall publish our findings here on this blog. Someone out there is capable of committing the perfect burger. And we shall not rest until we find, taste and relish it!

Five Guys | Five Guys Bacon Cheeseburger

So, I got to Five Guys in Covent Garden around 11:30 one morning a few weeks ago. Well, I didn't want to queue and I also had two other burger joints I wanted to visit that day so what the heck - there I was ordering a Bacon Cheeseburger at least an hour before I'd normally consider getting some lunch....

B.O.B's & Co @ The Rising Sun | Disco Bistro EC4 Disco Burger

Occupying a dining room above The Rising Sun pub on Carter Lane, only a matter of yards away from the West façade of St Paul's Cathedral, Carl Clarke's Disco Bistro is a rather lovely, unfussy place to dine that I'll be returning to ASAP. Despite the fact that I went there to sample the burger, the "snacks" on the menu sounded so great I wanted to try them all. Me and my dining buddies opted to share some chicken wings and when it became clear we couldn't decide whether we wanted the sticky or hot variety, our waiter kindly said he'd ask the kitchen to prepare a half and half bowl showcasing both. Sold!...

Patty & Bun James Street | Patty & Bun Ari Gold

If you want to stand out in a crowded marketplace full of people touting similar wares, you'll need a first class product and a charming personality. Luckily for Patty & Bun, the burgers (developed with Mark Jankel of Street Kitchen - more on that in a mo) are ace, and its head honcho, Joe Grossman, is one of the most endearingly ebuillient chaps you're ever likely to meet...

The Old Brewery (bar) | The Old Brewery Grilled Angus Beef Burger

£11.50 including hand cut chips. Extras (bacon / spicy coleslaw/ smoked Applewood cheese) are £1 each. Not a looker, but really good nonetheless. After a wrapping up some top-secret undercover ops in the patty world, MAJOR TIGHTBUNS is back reviewing for Burgerac and has just filed this report charting a recent burger'n'beer tasting mission at Meantime Brewery's Greenwich pub, The Old Brewery...TTTTTTTEEEENNNNNSSSSSSHHHHUUUNNNN!!!!! Major Tightbuns reporting for duty! The Grilled Angus Beef Burger at The Old Brewery has been getting praise from many corners of the Mess Hall of late so the only thing to head over for a recce...Being the bar of the Meantime Brewing Company, the list of carefully honed and favourable brews on offer was predictably excellent. And The Old Brewery food menu handily suggests what beer goes best with each dish – although given that this is, after all, the hallowed home of Meantime beer, perhaps it's more appropriate to think of the menu as a reference guide to what food will go best with the beer you're drinking (rather than the other way round)...

    BRGR.CO | BRGR.CO 6oz Tender Blend Burger

Another week, another new burger joint opens in the centre of London. This week it's the turn of Beirut burger joint BRGR.CO which promises a "brgrlicious experience". It fails to deliver… The scent of burger-generated cash wafts from London across oceans to lure burger-based businesses to come and get involved. Reading about their immenent opening a few weeks ago I wondered if the BRGR.CO crew had done their homework and were going to offer something on a par with its central London burger-vending neighbours, namely Lucky Chip, MEATliquor, Honest, and Patty & Bun. Now I've been, I know categorically, that they haven't and furthermore that they don't...

Dirty Burger Kentish Town | Dirty Burger

Occupying a small corrugated iron shack in Kentish Town round the back of Pizza East and Chicken Shop, Dirty Burger only serves one burger, the eponymous Dirty Burger... DB has been set up by global members club Soho House (who also own Pizza East and the recently opened Chicken Shop) who seem impressively quick to convert current food trends into cash cows. And, rather like they did with Pizza East, the company's tactic seems to be to open restaurants that do one thing, and do it with as much well-researched authenticity as it possibly can...

Tommi's Burger Joint Marylebone | Tommi

£9.40 for "Offer Of The Century" which equates to a cheeseburger, fries and a can of pop. Cheeseburger on its own is £5.80. Fries: £2.90.People have been raving about Tommi's, the new Icelandic burger joint in town and while I shared my thoughts on its wares in a news post in Burgerapp the day it opened, I thought I'd share them here on the blog too...Burgerac's New York correspondent, Colonel Mustard, dined at Burger Joint in Reykjavik back in March this year, and reported back to the effect that there wasn't much to report. Well, she's a New Yorker and a burger has to be hella good to impress her. Some readers might recall that she controversially gave Shake Shack only four out of five Burgerac stars last year...

    Elliot's Café | Elliot

£12.50 with fried potato. I took a day off work a few weeks ago to do some pre-wedding chores. And meet a friend at Elliot's for a burger...I've heard good things about the burger at Elliot's since it opened last year. As it's based on the edge of Borough Market and only serves burgers on weekday lunchtimes, it's not the most convenient place for me to check out - but taking a day off to find the perfect shoes to get married in provided a sneaky opportunity for me and a buddy to pop in for lunch...

Bread Street Kitchen | Bread Street Kitchen Short Rib Burger

£12.50 Since Bread Street Kitchen opened last year its burger has had several tweaks to improve it. Good skills, it's now AWESOME! It's true that Bread Street Kitchen's Short Rib Burger has already made an appearance here on Burgerac, but having had a couple in recent weeks, I felt obliged to re-blog it as I now consider it to be worthy of five golden Burgerac stars...
