What's New: London Venues — September 2008

Archives for September 2008

St James's Reopens with Michelin Chef - What's New: London Venues St James's Reopens with Michelin Chef

Reopening this week is St. James's Hotel and Club (tel: 020 7316 1600) following an 18 month refurb. Dating back to 1892 (when it opened as a gentlemen's chamber for the aristocracy), the elegant townhouse has four very stylish private dining/meeting rooms, catering for up to 120, and with Michelin-starred German chef Dieter Müller at the helm, food will be faultless.

Hang on to Summer in the City - What's New: London Venues Hang on to Summer in the City

We've found a way to hang onto summer all through the winter, by booking a private party at the Leadenhall branch of Revolution (tel: 020 7929 4233). It's all thanks to the Real Sunlight Machine. Long popular with the Swedes, it produces incredibly realistic (and totally harmless) rays of light and heat. The Revolution guys can lay on a sandy beach, palm trees and loungers to complete the experience. If popular, Revolution plan to roll it out across their 55 vodka bars nationwide.

Reopening for Just St James - What's New: London Venues Reopening for Just St James

Delightfully grand restaurant and bar Just St James has emerged from a summer makeover looking completely revitalised. The soaring ceilings, ornate chandeliers, spiral staircase and funky glass lift all remain, but the dining area has been moved and raised to ensure a pleasant view of St James below, and a new lighting system makes the space brighter. Host a drinks reception in the exclusive new Clicquot Lounge on the Gallery Level or take over the restaurant, holding 120.

New Restaurant for St Pancras - What's New: London Venues New Restaurant for St Pancras

Following the launch of the glamorous St Pancras Champagne Bar earlier this year, restaurant, bar and private dining room St Pancras Grand (tel: 020 7870 9900) is following hot on its heels. With specially created menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as an all-day menu, food is proudly British and seasonal, with a strictly European wine list. Private dining for 10 is the perfect way to welcome your visitors off Eurostar.

New Events Venue in Covent Garden - What's New: London Venues New Events Venue in Covent Garden

Covent Garden has a new dedicated meetings and events space right by the Piazza. Formerly the Theatre Museum, The Flower Cellars (tel: 020 7170 9133) is a great blank canvas space, with two floors of event space holding up to 250 on the ground floor and 750 on the lower ground, with bare brick and whitewashed walls. The Hospital Club Events Company will oversee bookings and events.

Though the likes of The Cross, Canvas and The Key have closed in King's Cross, The Egg is still going strong and has opened a new top floor, VR5 (tel: 020 7609 8364). It's a very funky space, holding 275 for a party, and has its own entrance and smoking terrace, along with some rather adventurous light projections.

Sing for your Supper - What's New: London Venues Sing for your Supper

At last an alternative to Sarastro: Le Bel Canto has just opened in the City. Already a big hit in Paris, it's essentially a programme of live opera, sung by professional singers and accompanied by pianists, alongside excellent three course dinners. Great for a private party for up to 160 or tables within normal service for up to 30.

We were thrilled to welcome over 7,000 of you to Old Billingsgate on 17 and 18 September for our fourth annual Venues & Events exhibition. Another resounding success, we had a huge number of new exhibitors and some great new features such as the Square Meal Canapé Cup; our 'insider knowledge' seminars were also more popular than ever. It's encouraging to see that even in what was a terrible week for the financial sector, we managed to buck the gloomy news with a 14 per cent increase in turnout too.
