Just in time for the summer, the East Beach Cafe will open by the sea in Littlehampton in June. Designed by architects, Heatherwick Studios, we’re told the cafe will look like it has been washed up on the shore – with a weathered shell and floor to ceiling glass widows looking out to sea. Brit seaside classics such as potted shrimp and fish and chips, will be served throughout the day. East Beach, Littlehampton, West Sussex. Tel: 01903 731903.
Nathan Outlaw finally has a restaurant named after him. The talented young chef – who won a Michelin star for the The Black Pig in Rock (at age 25) and moved to Padstow’s St Ervan Manor shortly after – has opened Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Fowey, where he’s displaying his usual flair in the kitchen. The Marina Villa Hotel, Fowey, Cornwall. Tel: 01726 833 315.
Hove’s Ginger Pig is the second opening from husband and wife team, Ben and Pamela McKellar, whose simple, homely food and commitment to locally sourced, seasonal produce has won scores of fans at The Gingerman in neighbouring Brighton. ‘Our aim is simple: we want to give people a warm, friendly pub serving honest, traditional food with a modern twist,’ says Ben. Oysters with Merlot and shallot vinegar and slow-roasted Boyton farm pork belly are what to expect. 3 Hove Street, Hove. Tel: 01273 736123
The Kensington Arms in Bristol is the new sibling of the city’s fashionable Clifton gastropub The Albion. It may look a bit more urban-chic than The Albion, but the food is seriously hearty stuff: terrine of guinea fowl, veal and bacon with sweet and sour beetroot, and organic steak and kidney pie with creamed potato and Guinness gravy. 35-37 Stanley Road, Redland, Bristol. Tel: 0117 944 6444
Daniel Clifford, chef-patron of Cambridge’s two Michelin-starred Midsummer House, has opened a pub in Brentwood, Essex. The Headley doesn’t serve the kind of inventive food Clifford is best known for. Rather it offers hearty dishes of fish pie, honey-braised pork belly with mustard mash and apple puree, and doorstop sandwiches at lunchtime. Headley Common, Great Warley, Brentwood, Essex. Tel: 01277 216104.
