Archives for October 2007

Water House - Coming Soon Water House

Having scored a hit with last year’s King’s Cross opening, Acorn House, eco-friendly restaurateurs Arthur Potts-Dawson and Jamie Grainger-Smith are following up with a second venture, called Water House, this time in hip Hoxton. It’s due to open in early 2008, and Grainger-Smith tells us it will have the same green ethos as Acorn House and will serve modern British food in a similarly unfussy vein. 10 Orsman Road, N1.

Richard Corrigan at Grosvenor House - Coming Soon Richard Corrigan at Grosvenor House

Acclaimed Irish chef Richard Corrigan is due to open his restaurant at Grosvenor House once the hotel’s multi-million-pound refurbishment is completed in early 2009. But until then hotel guests should be more than satisfied by Ollie Couillaud’s French brasserie, Bord’Eaux, which open in February 2008. The former head chef of Tom’s Kitchen says ‘it was time to return to my Gallic roots’, so expect dishes inspired by south-west France – from Bordeaux to Biarritz. Grosvenor House, Park Lane, W1. Tel: 020 7499 6363.

Galvin at The Waldorf Hilton - Coming Soon Galvin at The Waldorf Hilton

Not only are the Galvin brothers expanding their Baker Street premises to incorporate a basement wine bar below the bistrot de luxe, they’re also rumoured to be planning a new brasserie cafe and bar on the site that’s currently home to the ill-conceived Homage in The Waldorf Hilton on Aldwych. It’s all rather hush-hush, but it’s set to be much less fancy than the bistrot de luxe, serving reasonably priced French brasserie food. The Waldorf Hilton, 22 Aldwych, WC2. Tel 020 7836 2400.

The Landau at The Langham - Coming Soon The Landau at The Langham

Chef Andrew Turner, who wowed Londoners with his tasting menus at 1880 before heading off to Pennyhill Park in Surrey, is returning to the capital with the launch of The Landau at The Langham hotel in early November. With star designer David Collins in charge of the interiors, the space is set to look rather more cutting-edge than its former incarnation, Memories. Expect the contemporary east-meets-west look to be similar to that at the hotel’s bar, Artesian. Sounds like a fitting backdrop for Turner’s innovative food. The Langham, 1 Portland Place, W1. Tel: 020 7636 1000.

Dehesa - Coming Soon Dehesa

Hugely popular Goodge Street tapas restaurant Salt Yard is to soon have a sibling down the road in Soho. Dehesa will open in January on Kingly Street, with food in a similar style: sharing dishes based on Spanish and Italian flavours paired with carefully selected wines and sherries. The difference is that Dehesa will be all-day, and more casual; there’ll also be a no- reservations policy, a long communal table (as well as more intimate banquettes), and a brunch menu. The basement will house a glass-fronted wine cellar and a 12-seat private room that will be used for tastings as well as private functions. 17 Kingly Street, W1.

Zulu - Coming Soon Zulu

As if Gilgamesh, Camden’s gilt-clad ode to ancient Babylon (pictured), wasn’t kitsch enough, the owners are apparently planning to turn the floor below it into an African-themed restaurant called Zulu.

Atlantic Bar & Grill, Titanic

Rumour has it that those Soho icons of 90s dining, the Atlantic Bar & Grill and Marco Pierre White’s Titanic, are to re-open over the course of 2008.
