SquareMeal Review of The Chelsea Pig

It would be a shortfall not to firstly touch on the interiors at newly-renovated The Chelsea Pig, for they have been crafted by British furniture brand Timothy Oulton. Fittingly, a dedicated corner of this cosy pub is set in the style of a home-from-home living room complete with a period fireplace, coffee table and union jack-emblazoned sofa (the latter feature really does draw the eye). The décor throughout heroes a moody colour palette, from floor-to-ceiling navy velvet curtains and grey-paneled walls to dark wooden textures. Combined with numerous hanging crystal chandeliers, the style of this 19th century pub sits somewhere between homely and gothic.

Onto the food and we were pleased to be presented with a concise menu featuring a handful each of starters and mains, all made with seasonal and British ingredients. We started with Scottish scallops paired with a smooth celeriac puree, buttery wild mushrooms and sweet blackberries which was simple and well-balanced, while its dainty proportions left us wanting more.

Elsewhere, classic pub grub gets an elegant, well-presented twist. A nicely-browned fillet of cod was paired with artichoke, swiss chard and caviar sauce while the chicken pot roast was well seasoned and hearty. We also ordered a side of potatoes to ramp up the carb component, but if you were less hungry, then the main dishes would suffice. From the dessert section, a neat slice of treacle tart arrived with Grand Marnier caramel – we welcomed the boozy element, but perhaps could have done with some cooling ice cream to break up the sweetness.

Each course was paced well and, when more than two dishes were required, were delivered in one fell swoop by extra staff dressed in white lapelled jackets. A main course will set you back between £20-30, which seems about right for a pub in Chelsea. If you’re only in town for a drink then we’d recommend ordering a bespoke cocktail at the bar, if only to languish in Oulton’s dramatically-designed surroundings.

About

The venue that houses popular SW3 pub The Chelsea Pig has been around since 1892 and it is a space that has long been thought of as something of a rarity, offering a genuinely charming boozer amid Chelsea’s backstreets.

The pub’s latest iteration is led by Timothy Oulton, marking the acclaimed furniture designer’s first foray into the world of London hospitality. The pub spreads itself across two floors, comprising a bar and informal dining space on the ground floor and then a proper dining room on the first floor, which is known as the Trophy Room. Unsurprisingly, the pub is a stylish space featuring a rich colour palette and bespoke design accents such as a handcrafted bar in moonstone with glass baguettes suspended in a brass frame and an array of vintage furnishings from Oulton’s personal archives. Adding further glamour are hand finished leather seating and modern chandeliers which hang from the ceiling.

The Chelsea Pig is open every day from midday, serving a lunch and dinner menu of classic British favourites, alongside a bar stocked with premium and classic beers, as well as spirits, cocktails, wines and Champagnes. While the menu may take influence from traditional British cuisine, do not expect run of the mill pub grub here. Instead, diners can tuck into luxe dishes such as beef wellington or roast halibut in a Champagne sauce. Elsewhere, you can choose more comforting plates such as the stacked house burger or lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, while on Sundays Hereford rib of beef for two offers a hearty alternative to a classic roast.

Oulton currently operates 46 stores worldwide, across glitzy locations such as Miami and Malibu, while he also has a gallery at nearby Chelsea restaurant Bluebird (famed for its numerous appearances on the popular reality show Made In Chelsea).

I made a booking for Saturday night a few weeks ago. When we arrived, there were a number of two seater tables left open, but we were instead offered dinner on top of a bar stool. It seems the other tables were reserved for more important customers. Very poor show. After we complained, we were offered dinner in the upstairs private dining room alone?

Was really looking forward to dinner at the Chelsea Pig, what a disappointment. Was sat upstairs with one waitress trying to manage all the covers. Chased our drink order 3 times, two hours from our table reservation time our main courses hadn't arrived. Scallop starter very poor, one scallop sliced in to pieces. Burger ok. Won't be going back

Awful

We booked this restaurant about 6 weeks ago as this was the earliest availability they had . Our expectations were high.

Upon arrival our waitress  told us with guild written all over her face that the downstairs seating was full and we'd be seated upstairs. The upstairs room really felt like an overflow room and for the first 45 minutes there was just one other table occupied. Eventually the room was 30% full. Really worth booking 6 weeks in advance for!?! The room was also freezing cold and we asked if they could put the heating up. It didn't get any warmer and when I looked around the room I saw some other guests sitting with their coats on. This confirmed to me that I wasn't imagining things.

We ordered some cocktails which were really good and the best thing of the whole evening.

For starters we ordered the seared scallops. When the plate came it was clear there was only one scallop on each plate which was cut into 4 small pieces. I'd  wished they had told us they had run out scallops. The scallop was burnt and very dry. Shocking they charged £17 for this dish.
For mains we ordered Stargazy Pie and the Beef  burger.

This dish was described as a langoustine pie. When the pie arrived there was a langoustine carcass on top of the pastry and I got  excited and looked forward to tucking into this pie. Only to be disappointed as there were no langoustines to be found under the pastry. It didn't even taste of langoustines and I realised that the carcass was only there for decoration. What I did find under the pastry was a fish pie with chunks of salmon and cod. These were the type of chunks you buy prepacked from the supermarket shelf. Thank goodness I don't have an allergy to these fish and I actually like both fish. In the description of the dish there was no mention of salmon nor cod.
when I pointed this out the the waiter I was told that there were langoustines in the dish but they had "melted away" in the fish pie sauce.  Yeah... right...
My partner's burger was ok but came without the fries. We had to ask for the fries twice and by the time they arrived we had finished the rest of our food. If a kitchen can't even produce a portion of fries on time some serious questions have to be asked about their competence. We didn't bother with deserts but ordered some herbal teas as we were freezing. The bill came to £165 (including a couple of glasses of wine) which seems extortionate for a glorified gastro pub with appalling food. We will never go there again .

One of the cosiest pubs in London - gorgeous food and stunning interiors

I loved it! It was so inviting and the chandeliers give off the most beautiful light - we came in for lunch and the salmon starter and Stargazy pie were so delicious and the staff were so welcoming! I can't wait to go back and have a bottle of red wine by the fire.

The Pig's Ear exudes a special kind of charm and has a very authentic atmosphere. The menu ranges from fresh oysters to other fresh market dishes inlcuding nowadays slightly less commonly used cuts of – you guessed it – pork. There is something very understated about the place – much like the very pretty part of Chelsea, off King's Road but not quite by the river yet, were the restaurant is. It is not cheap, one can easily spend £80 on a meal for two depending on what one orders and what kind of wine goes with it, but it has a special vibe and surprisingly there are still very few casual places to eat in this part of the town.
