The was a time when quirky indie bars such as this were ten-a-penny, but that was back when 12 pennies made one shilling. Design-wise, the heroically eccentric Aviary is part of an endangered species, stuck in its own delicious time-warp: welcome to a fake limestone grotto with model birds, an aquarium and pink-padded velvet walls leading down to a lit-up 60s-style disco. Prices are modern enough, although the line-up is loaded with retro rinses such as Tequila sunrise and blue lagoon that are now touted as cutting edge in London’s nu-wave lounges. Around £5 buys Euro beers or a choice of three house wines by the glass, but the vibe itself is priceless. Check before dropping in, or risk being politely turned away by a dapper greeter who could be one of Cliff Richard’s Shadows circa The Young Ones .
