SquareMeal Review of Gaucho Charlotte Street

Bronze Award

Set among concrete office blocks on the quieter, northern end of Charlotte Street, the Fitzrovia outpost of the Gaucho chain has always been a buzzy medialand haunt par excellence. It’s got a whole lot more on-trend thanks to a recent eco-makeover to mark its 25th anniversary.

Gone are the trademark black-and-white fixtures, shiny surfaces and cowhide seating, replaced instead with earthy tones and textured walls designed to evoke the pampas of Argentina and the modern spirit of real gauchos (Argentine cowboys/girls). We can’t help missing the cowhide, though we have to admit that the lighting is a lot better these days.

It’s not just the decor that’s changed in the revamp – Gaucho’s whole concept has been overhauled to become more socially and environmentally conscious. From employing people deemed ‘unemployable’ to improving its carbon footprint, installing sockets for remote workers and welcoming dogs, Gaucho 2.0 marks a distinct change in creative direction.

Loyal diners need not fear though – the new owners are keen to stay true to the brand’s DNA with a menu based firmly around modern Argentinian cuisine. Steaks still take centre stage and are available in a variety of cuts and weights, from melt-in-the-mouth lomo (fillet) to traditional churrascaria (a marinated spiral cut).

For steak enthusiasts, there’s a brand-new four-seater ‘beef bar’ where diners can watch and interact with the chefs as they deliver tartare, carpaccio and a variety of specials and new dishes and even cook their own steak, though we preferred to let the chef prepare ours medium-rare as requested. A spicy fish chimichurri was our favourite sauce, although a light-handed sprinkling of salt truly does the meat justice.

New menu items include the likes of Atlantic cod with garlic and herb half-lobster, spatchcock chicken and beetroot risotto. The menu rounds off with the likes of sweet, creamy dulce de leche cheesecake. Pre- or post-prandial cocktails can be sipped in one of two elegant cocktail bars, and on certain evenings the restaurant hosts movie nights where guests eat and drink what they see on the screen.

About

This much-loved site of the Argentinian steak restaurant chain Gaucho has been redesigned to reflect contemporary Argentina (Gauchos are Argentine cowboys/girls). The chain's first site opened in 1994, bringing Argentine food to the UK. The group now has sixteen sites across the UK, including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

The menu at Gaucho Charlotte Street takes visitors on a journey through not just Argentina, but the rest of South America. Expect exciting starters like shrimp ceviche, empanadas or seared scallops with mango puree, red pepper sauce and nduja crumb. Naturally, steaks are the centrepiece of Gaucho's offering. Choose from eight different cuts each prepared to best showcase the meat, most of which also come in three different sizes. These cuts include the usual suspects: rump, ribeye, sirloin, fillet, as well as some spiral-cut options. There are also large steak portions for sharing. Looking to the non-steak mains, one finds comforting staples like burgers, braised lamb shank and pumpkin gnocchi. Sides include a variety of vegetable dishes as well as truffle mac and cheese for a truly decadent feast. Desserts continue the theme of indulgence, with entries like tray-baked cookie dough, sticky toffee pudding and a selection of Argentine ice cream flavours.

You can start your meal with a welcome cocktail like an elder 75 or koi martini, and/or an aperitif like a Zacapa negroni or Hennessy Julep. Gaucho also offer palate-cleansing cocktails and even cocktails better suited to accompanying steak! The wine list includes a map of Argentina's terruño (the Spanish equivalent of terroirs) and offers a range of Argentine and non-Argentine bottles. There is also a list of sustainable drinks for more environmentally-conscious cocktail enthusiasts.

For larger groups, there are separate group menus with canapes, bowl food and sharing platters, and for families, there is a children's menu too.

I visited Gaucho Charlotte Street on New Year’s Eve, and I have to say the service and quality of the Menu was second to none. They really went to town to ensure we had an evening to remember. The GM (Michael) I think his name was charming and polite. We started out evening in the opulent and stylish tasting room; we sampled 4 Malbec’s even before we were seated with the lovely Jake – great knowledge and a charming fella indeed the un oaked Malbec from Donald Hess was simple divine. The menu was well craved and presented with style and sophistication, our waitress was also excited her diction whilst doing the famed ‘meat Board’ was clear that left me wanting more. I have visited many Gaucho's and have very rarely walked feeling hard done by, this place captures all that is great about argentine culture and leaves you wishing you were in the hassle and bustle of BA…
