SquareMeal Review of Donna Margherita

This popular pizza joint may not be worth a trip across town, but as a local, it’s hard to beat. The interior – dressed up with washing lines of Napoli football shirts & general southern Italian bric-a-brac – is an odd sight in London, but it’s best to go with the flow & enjoy it. Food is fun & of a high quality. There’s an ample choice of antipasti, including several familiar dishes (bruschetta, carpaccio, octopus salad), but also lentils with friarielli (broccoli rabe) & chilli. Next, the big wood-fired oven is used to full advantage, producing excellent crisp-based pizzas with classic Neapolitan toppings. Pasta comes in hearty portions; recommended is the homemade scialatielli with mixed seafood & chilli. In comparison, main courses are slightly uninspiring if well prepared (mixed grills, sausages & potatoes, baked fish). Booking essential.

Not really authentic Neapolitan restaurant
This restaurant pizzeria is 15 years old. Located on Lavender street, near Clapham Junction station. The restaurant was born as Neapolitan restaurant, the majority of the people working in there are actually from Naple’s region. The dining room has the typical feeling of an Italian “Trattoria”, rustic Italian restaurant devoted to produce good food, without bothering too much about the interior style. On the right of the room you will find a decent display selection of Italian wines with READ MORE http://dinewithjp.com/donna-margherita/

Great local
Sitting on the less than inspiring Lavender Hill, Donna Margherita is a joy to visit. Circa ten years old, it feels new, with a modern decor and ambience, and with seriously well executed traditional Neopolitan fare, it performs admirably for the nappy valley crowd of Clapham. A very happy team give a warm welcome We kicked off with two specials; the calamari polpette (squid meatballs) which were crispy outside and had delicious subtle minced squid inside. served with a tartar sauce and livened up a little with peperoncino. In addition we had a bowl of steamed and sautéed clams and mussels, perfectly executed with the salty bisque tempered by the white wine. A risotto with Italian sausage, spinach and mozarella worked a charm as did the very generous spaghetti astice (lobster). We washed it down with the lesser known Pomino Bianco, an excellent choice from the impressively good value wine list put together by in house sommelier Graziano. My friend gulped down a perfect Tiramisu to complement a perfect Sunday lunch. Definitely worth a try and good value too. All the above including coffees and an Amaretto to finish came in at 50 quid a head. shall certainly be returning.
