SquareMeal Review of Brasserie Blanc Chancery Lane

Pitched in the heart of London’s legal district, this branch of Raymond Blanc’s user-friendly brasserie chain is spread over two levels, with the upper floor morphing into a wine bar as the post-work crowd moves in for drinks and socialising Rich oak panelling, wooden floors and booth seating create just the right mood for head-to-head business lunches or congenial get-togethers. To start, share a ‘plateau varié’ (deli board) or go for ‘Maman Blanc’s miscellany of salads’ before sampling steak-frites, devilled lamb’s kidneys with sautéed potatoes or grilled scallops with truffle mash and braised fennel. For afters, why not order Valrhona chocolate crumble or go for a poached pear with butterscotch sauce. Two-course set menus (from £10.95 lunch, £14 dinner), various kids’ deals and Gallic regional wines direct from the producer are further reasons to be impressed.

About

On the western boundary of the City and in the midst of one of London’s busiest financial districts, Brasserie Blanc Chancery Lane is ideally located for an after-work bite. The restaurant is part of celebrity chef Raymond Blanc’s chain which spans 14 restaurants across England and celebrates the French cuisine he learned to cook at his mother’s table as a child.

While most of the Brasserie Blanc chain conforms to a similar aesthetic, picking out rustic, farmhouse-style details, Brasserie Blanc Chancery Lane’s décor is bespoke and works with the building’s original features. At the entrance of the restaurant, you’ll find large, arched windows which flood the small space with natural light. Following the building’s long, narrow shape, seating favours either sleek banquettes or booths, upholstered in black leather.  Walls are panelled with decorative wood and the ceilings are decorated with period cornicing, revealing the building's history.

This could be a great place for food if booking for a larger group, but if you’re dining as a pair we’d recommend asking not to be sat in the centre of the restaurant, which looks to be a bit of a squeeze.

If you’re hoping to taste one of Raymond’s favourite dishes, then you might want to steer towards the authentically French parts of the menu such as Morteau sausage with potato salad, baked Saint-Marcellin cheese and chicken paillard. But, there are also plenty of recipes gathered from his trips abroad, too. Other highlights from the a la carte menu include jackfruit fritters and green papaya salad, grilled salmon fillet and Malabar fish curry.

Excellent food, friendly staff, great venue and lovely ambiance, at very affordable prices and regular offers. It makes it seem like an expensive romantic evening out, for a fraction of the expected price.
