SquareMeal Review of Baltic

Bronze Award

Tardis-like, Baltic’s narrow frontage on noisy Blackfriars Road is a misleading introduction to what lies within. Step inside and you’ll discover an 18th-century coach-builder’s workshop that has been hollowed out and dressed in white –a barn-sized yet utterly elegant space with soaring ceilings, skylights and concrete floors. The dining room is reached through the bar, where inviting cocktails and icy vodkas may encourage you to linger. The menu roams across the Baltic and beyond, jumping borders and delivering a hotchpotch of culinary refugees from pierogi and pelmeni dumplings, spätzle and blinis with various toppings to gutsy winter-warming plates of pork shank with sauerkraut or lighter options such as red snapper in walnut and pomegranate sauce. There’s a generous list of Old World wines, jazz on Sunday evenings and a good-value set menu at £19.50.

Food varied and nicely presented, outstanding table service. Great decor especially in the evening when it gets dark and you can see the candles lit up on the glass roof - looks like stars, good for small intimated dining and group bookings. Cocktails no complaints!

It is easy to walk past this restaurant but once inside the space is very light and modern. The Eastern European menu contains some really delicious options that are well executed.

Pre-Theatre
Good, friendly service, lively atmosphere, very reasonably priced pre-theatre menu and enjoyable food! The house wine is also good and reasonably priced. I would recommend The Baltic as an excellent pre-theatre option for the Old or Young Vic.

Amazing food and great prices, a diamond in the rough! Great cocktails, shabby chic decor, warm friendly staff, great place to go for lunch or dinner.

Great value pre-theatre
Light and airy and uncluttered, this is a very pleasant place to eat - smart but not too formal. The pre-theatre menu was good value and the portions were very generous, the service was friendly and efficient but not hurried. The restaurant was lively but not too noisy. A popular spot.

What a find
Although this is hardly a new opening, I visited with family for the first time on the Saturday of Easter weekend. It was not a busy evening, but there were enough people to make some atmosphere. The service level was excellent. All the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Help was certainly needed with the huge selection of vodkas. The ones we selected were all excellent, especially the honey vodka which is served hot! Between the four of us we had a good selection of food and it was all excellent. The was a big surprise at the end when the bill arrived and it was significantly less than I expected given the quality and quantity of the food and drink we had consumed. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a fun dinner with something different from the standard European dining experience.

Great value from the set price menu
Visited Saturday lunchtime before heading off to the rugby at Twickenham. Good choice on the menu and noticed that the starter and main course I would have chosen from the a la carte menu were also on the set price menu. Started with Kapusniak, a substantial soup of Sauerkraut, pork and sausage, followed by a main course of lamb stew with pumpkin. My fellow diners chose duck rillettes and chargrilled pork neck with vegetables from the set price menu at £19.50 for two courses or £22.50 for three courses. The price includes a Bloody Mary or a Bellini. A bottle of good Hungarian red at £21.00 and the bill including a cheese board, one glass of port and three coffees was £133 including 12.5% service charge for four people. A really good start for what turned out to be an excellent day with England edging past Ireland at Twickenham. Would definitely come again, maybe in the evening to sample the extensive range of vodka.
