SquareMeal Review of YSP Cafe

There can’t be too many places in the country where you can enjoy wholesome, good-value food overlooking 500 acres of rolling countryside dotted with monumental sculptures by Henry Moore & Barbara Hepworth. But take a one-mile detour off the M1 just north of Sheffield, & you’re in the world-famous Yorkshire Sculpture Park. A tramp round the lakes should sharpen the appetite, before you head up to the gloriously modernist visitor centre – all glass, steel & weathered wood board. Eat in the mezzanine cafe, where a huge blackboard lists the day’s dishes – perhaps venison & juniper pate, followed by meat & potato pie. Homemade soups might include leek & mustard, huge floury jacket potatoes spill over with chilli or roasted vegetables, while mighty slabs of warm Bakewell tart are best enjoyed with a cup of coffee by the vast floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking all that art & nature.
